Almost every team in the league runs some sort of Tampa 2 defense.....The Steelers run it sometimes, the Colts run it...NE runs it as well. The Tampa 2 scheme is good if you have the players to run it. Of course a team with a good TE can exploit it all day long...

Uh... no The Steelers invented it as "the steel curtain".

Chuck Noll and Bud Carson — that is where it came from, I changed very little.”

Dungy got the roots of the defense from the Steelers but the development of the defense did not occur until 1996 when Dungy and Monty Kiffen utilized it at Tampa. The Steelers probably did run some type of Cover two defense that had the MLB playing zone in the middle of the field but it was not the focal point of the defense. Tampa utilized the "Tampa 2" defense as the core of their defense.

You did read the quote, right? Let me take the part that matters and replay it for you:

My philosophy is ... the 1975 Pittsburgh Steelers playbook ... I changed very little. -- Dungy.

They didn't "invent" anything. They got naming credit because it was working again and admit it.

'nuff said.

Dungy is not a "Me" guy....yes he got the idea from the 75 Steelers but he built it out....He applied it to todays game and he did tweak it to fit todays game. The 75 steelers did not run the Tampa Two defensive scheme. They may have had concepts that were the same......

Next, lets argue that Bill Walsh didnt really come up with the west coast offense because a lot of his philosophy came from Paul Brown. SO....Paul Brown was the inventor of the West Coast Offense.

We are talking about philosophy vs scheme.....Steelers (chuck knolls) philosophy vs Tony Dungy's scheme that is based in Steeler philosophy.

Fair enough. As I've said elsewhere, the Tampa Two requires four defensive linemen who can *dominate* the LOS. The secondary needs to be very fast and have the ability to tackle... often gang tackling.

This wasn't exactly the way the Steelers did it.

If there's a big difference between the schemes it's based on personnel and the adaptations required by the Tampa roster.

That said, it's improbable that you can get the right players for a working Tampa Two defense here on GLB because people tend to build in the cookie-cutter formulas they find in wiki's and that veteran players suggest. Finding a truly unique player is a treat.
