Let’s take a quick look through the results in Zeta from Week 9…
Most games went as expected:
Honolulu defeated Ayers Rock 62-14.
Devonport sunk Suva 174-7.
Christmas rode Lexington 87-10.
Komodo downed Dayton 59-16.
DECATUR took care of AAC 64-27.
There were 3 good games.
Alaska upsets Fiji 34-20.
I had this game as close, with a probable loss for Alaska, but they came with their best play and dominated the game, netting 458 yards of offense to Fiji’s 279. Led by a very balanced rushing attack of 5 players, the Wild were able to take home a key win. For a team on the bubble for the playoffs, this could make a HUGE difference between making it or not.
Port Moresby slides by Rochester 23-21.
In a surprisingly strong showing by the Iroquois, they went toe-to-toe with the Scallywags the entire game. This one could have gone either way. In fact, it took a FG by Port Moresby with 1:06 left to get the victory. I think Rochester has made some changes and may put up a fight the rest of the way.
Samoa Savages slip past Dunedin 31-30.
As stated in the playoff projections, these two teams are pretty even, with the slight edge to Samoa. It couldn’t have been any slighter! In a game where Dunedin actually had almost 100 extra yards of offense (Dunedin 411.5 to Samoa 323), and no turnovers to Samoa’s 1, it is hard to see at first glance how they lost this game. In the end, the game was decided in the 4th quarter with Dunedin having to settle for a 2 FGs while Samoa was able to sustain their drive and only had to settle for 1 FG and scored 1 TD with 1:55 left in the game to seal the victory for the Savages. Great game by both teams!
Now let’s look forward to next week. Week 10 is the week of the no-contest matchups. There are only two games that are 10 points or closer this week. Here are the projections for Week 10 (written before the week 9 games were played):
DECATUR STALEYS (8-1) vs Ayers Rock Krakens (3-6) DECATUR by 62, 75-13
DECATUR is looking strong and won’t have any difficulties with Ayers Rock as they crack the Krakens wide open in this game.
Honolulu Skulls (8-1) vs Fiji Rage (6-3) Honolulu by 55, 65-10
Fiji has had a great season, but now face the Skulls and STALEYS back-to-back. The Skulls are all business and will leave Fiji very bruised and beaten after this one.
Christmas Islanders (7-2) vs Samoa Savages (5-4) Christmas by 15, 35-20
Samoa has a good team and will surprise someone one day if they can get a few things straightened out. But the Islanders are a solid team and shouldn’t get surprised today as they down the Savages.
Komodo Dragons (7-2) vs Suva Sparklets (0-9) Komodo by 203, 203-0
The Dragons will be able to relax and enjoy the Sparklets (cheerleaders) on the sideline – even while they are in the middle of an 85 yd TD run.
Port Moresby (6-3) vs Dunedin Drones (4-5) Port Moresby by 28, 52-24
The Dunedin Drones always put up a tough fight, but the Scallywags are just too strong for the Drones. Port Moresby will roll in convincing fashion.
Alaska Wild (5-4) vs Dayton Gumslingers (1-8) Alaska by 9, 39-30
Alaska has made a good showing this season. Dayton looks awful by their record, but really haven’t been that far out of most games and may surprise someone with an upset. But not today, as the Wild have been very focused all season and won’t slip up in this one.
An Album Cover (4-5) vs Rochester Iroquois (2-7) AAC by 10, 40-30
Rochester is another team that has talent, but is underachieving. If they can find the answer, they will certain put a little shake-up in the rankings as they are capably of pulling a few upsets in the current predictions. AAC is very solid and should handle the Iroquois by a safe margin.
Devonport Devils (5-4) vs Lexington Cruise Lines (0-9) 76, 85-9
The Devils take a relaxing ride on Lexington Cruise Lines this week to enjoy a little sun around the islands.

3/15: Updated Fiji's and Alaska's records. As I said above, I had written the week 10 predictions before week 9 games were played. I had Fiji winning the game against Alaska and forgot to correct the records once Alaska pulled the upset. Thanks for catching it sbruhn77!
