Mysticpoopoohead has decided to throw down the gauntlet after I made one suggestion to help improve his rankings a little:

He seems pretty stuck up but I think almost anyone else could do a better job, so "I'll take [his] bet, [he's] gonna regret, 'cause I'm" ... err.. gonna win.

I put poopoo's rankings after mine, for reference. His rankings do ok with the very best and very worst teams, but he has no concept how to rank the teams that are somewhat difficult to rank, and require a bit of skill. Without further ado, here's what I consider to be a FAR superior set of rankings:

WEST
1) Mentone Beach Assault (pp-1) dominated every team they've played so far, though admittedly they have yet to play a team I have ranked in the top 8 of either conference, so the hope is that they may be not quite so dominant against better teams - that's the hope anyway.
2a) Corpus Christi Illegal Aliens (pp-2) game 1 & 2 CCIA looked very mediocre but a much improved team the past couple of games
2b) Bakersfield Nanananas (pp-4) game 1 looked bad - lucky to escape with a win - but since then has looked very tough
2c) Mighty Chihuahuas (pp-3) game 1 looked dominant, game 2 very mediocre, game 3 good, and game 4 was a freebie - team is ranked "2c" and not "2b" or "2a" mainly because they seem to be cooling from their hot first game, but have still shown enough to be considered about the same level as the other 2's
5) Steel City Sentinels (pp-9) 2 freebies then 2 wins against playoff-quality teams
6) Idaho Rex (pp-12) I respect the Rex organization a lot. They just showed they are a shade behind Steel City and have played everyone tough.
7) Detroit Revolvers (pp-11) Another team I respect a lot. Have played a tough schedule and been very competitive.
8a) Beantown Bastards (pp-5) the most consistent of the remaining teams; current favorite to round out the playoff group
8b) Long Beach Dub All-Stars (pp-9) at times, like game 1, look better than Beantown, but last game lost by 3 to the lower-ranked Dallas Hitmen; I'm keeping Long Beach higher ranked than Dallas based on the closeness of the game and their very different levels of success earlier in the season
10a) Big Bear Avalanche (pp-6) solid organization but has struggled this season
10b) Dallas Hitmen (pp-8) first 2 games were very bad including a 7 point loss to Big Bear, but last 2 games have shown some improvement including a 3 point win over higher ranked Long Beach; improvement noted but still too early to rank this team any higher
12) Virginia George Washingtons (pp-7) This was a very good team last season that looked good in game 1 but then terrible in games 2 & 3; game 4 was a freebie; this team could rebound but right now they are struggling mightily
13) Los Angeles Cobras (pp-15) have shown much more improvement than other cellar dwellers
14a) Eugene SLUGs (pp-14)
14b) Pittsburgh Stillers (pp-13)
14c) Washington Bow Chicka Brown Cows (pp-16)

EAST
1a) Tennessee Fury (pp-1) have done better than other East teams but haven't played any teams I have ranked in the top 8 in either Conference yet; game 1 was a very mediocre showing; game 3 was good; games 2 & 4 were freebies
1b) Boston Bears (pp-2) have looked as good games 2 & 3 as they did bad game 1; game 4 was a freebie
3) Dirty Cheetahs (pp-4) as their game 1 demonstrated, they might struggle to make the playoffs in the Western Conference, but in the Eastern are one of the better teams
4) Saint Paul Vulcans (pp-5) lost to the Cheetahs by 13 two games ago and beat the Tighas by 10 last game, so this is where they belong
5a) Louisiana State Tighas (pp-6) seem to be cooling slightly after a decent start
5b) New Jersey Mobsters (pp-9) hot and cold team played well games 1 & 3, and struggled games 2 & 4; lost by 1 point last game against Phoenix but ranked a bit higher based on a bit better performance over the season, and the closeness of the score
7) Phoenix Scorpions (pp-8) a mighty franchise last season that has struggled mightily this season
8a) Enghave Evolution (pp-10) after a woeful game 1, Enghave has improved and been competitive games 2 & 4, and had a freebie game 3; they just beat Sleepy Hollow by 3 so are in the right spot
8b) Sleepy Hollow Horsemen (pp-3) their best game was game 1, and they looked a lot better than Enghave that game; game 2 was a freebie; games 3 & 4 Sleepy Hollow has looked bad; they are correctly ranked a bit worse than Enghave but at about the same level
10a) Iowa Hogeyes (pp-11) had a very nice showing game 1, but looked very bad games 2 & 3; game 4 was a freebie
10b) Texas Wrecking Crew (pp-7) game 1 was a freebie; game 2 they looked ok, but games 3 & 4 have both been bad showings
12) Houston Toxins (pp-12) better than the bottom 4 teams
13a) Los Angeles Bicycle Clowns (pp-14)
13b) NJ Hitmen (pp-13)
13c) Philadelphia Birds (pp-15)
13d) Atlantic City Aces (pp-16)

I will back up these rankings by making some predictions about upcoming games - I'm waiting for them to post the matchups to make it easier for me. I'll make a note who poopoohead thinks would win according to his rankings, too. I am quite certain that my rankings will be proven better in upcoming games and over the season. Admittedly, it wasn't hard to do better rankings than poopoohead's, but I wanted to do it anyway just because I like a challenge.

Our Off. AI was a little messed up that first game and directly cost us 2 TD's. We beat Detroit if we play them today.

Cheetas are a very solid team. I guess Sly forgot that the East beat the West in inter conference play, and our #1 team beat their #1 team? I think the West has been the better conference the past 2-3 seasons, but this season both seem to be rather equal.

Of course he could be referring to parity. There's more of that in the East than in the West (where you are either elite or abysmal - very few teams outside that box). Parity means you don't need as good of a record to get into the playoffs, because when teams are relatively close in strength the better teams are going to have a few losses in the season.

Parity means you don't need as good of a record to get into the playoffs, because when teams are relatively close in strength the better teams are going to have a few losses in the season.

Inter-conference games results:

West #1 Mentone Beach BEAT East #12 Houston Toxins by 83
West #2 CCIA BEAT East #7 Phoenix by 13
West #3 Bakersfield BEAT East #10 Iowa by 1
West #4 Mighty BEAT East #8 Enghave by 52
West #5 Steel City BEAT East #15 Philadelphia by 37
West #6 Idaho lost to East #6 New Jersey Mobsters by 11
West #7 Detroit BEAT East #3 Dirty by 8
West #8 Beantown lost to East #9 Sleepy Hollow by 4
West #9 Long Beach lost to East #1 Tennessee by 6
West #10 Big Bear lost to East #4 Saint Paul by 25
West #11 Dallas lost to East #5 Louisiana State by 27
West #12 Virginia BEAT East #2 Boston by 7
West #15 Pittsburgh Stillers lost to East #11 Texas Wrecking Crew by 243

So, eliminating the 2 games against bottom 4 opponents, the 11 members of the top 12 West teams that played a member of the top 12 East teams were 6-5, advantage to West.

In the West, the top 5 teams were 5-0. In the East, the top 5 teams were 3-2.

In the West, the top 8 teams (playoff teams) were 6-2. In the East, the top 8 teams (playoff teams) were 4-4.

The West has much stronger teams in upper half of the rankings. The East's bottom 4 teams are better than the West's bottom 4 teams so that's how the statistics get skewed. But amongst playoff-level teams, the West is much, much stronger, without a doubt.

Probably every team in the top 12 of the West would be a playoff contender (either a playoff team or on the cusp) if they were in the East. For the East, probably half that many teams, (ie 6, or maybe 7) would be a playoff contender if they were in the West. I think 6 teams in the West would have a good shot at getting a home playoff game were they in the East. Only 1 or possibly 2 teams in the East would have any shot at getting a home playoff game if they were in the West.

Here's the inter-conference games again from the East's perspective:

East #1 Tennessee BEAT West #9 Long Beach by 6
East #2 Boston lost to West #12 Virginia by 7
East #3 Dirty lost to West #7 Detroit by 8
East #4 Saint Paul BEAT West #10 Big Bear by 25
East #5 Louisiana State BEAT West #11 Dallas by 27
East #6 New Jersey Mobsters BEAT West #6 Idaho by 11
East #7 Phoenix lost to West #2 CCIA by 13
East #8 Enghave lost to West #4 Mighty by 52
East #9 Sleepy Hollow BEAT West #8 Beantown by 4
East #10 Iowa lost to West #3 Bakersfield by 1
East #11 Texas Wrecking Crew BEAT West #15 Pittsburgh Stillers by 243
East #12 Houston Toxins lost to West #1 Mentone Beach by 83
East #15 Philadelphia lost to West #5 Steel City by 37

GG Chihuahuas! Didn't expect that type of a game.

Results from the challenge:

Correctly predicted 15 of 16 games (the only game I missed - Texas City winning over poopoohead's team, poopoohead's rankings also had his team higher; poopoo's rankings had Virginia well ahead of Long Beach which was a huge error and I got that game right)

My predictions were better than poopoohead's on Bakersfield over Detroit (poopoo had Detroit as the #11 team so indicated Bakersfield should destroy them - I had Detroit #7, and expected a competitive game, and Long Beach over Virginia - poopoo had Virginia as the higher ranked team???)

In fairness, there were some places where poopoohead's rankings were more indicative of actual results but we still both predicted the correct team to win in those cases - again, I only got one game wrong (poopoo's team losing) and poopoo's rankings also had his team higher ranked.

Got very closer to actual score on 6 games:
Beantown I predicted would win by 130 they won by 145
Big Bear I predicted a "rout" they won by 255+
Long Beach I predicted would win by 10 they won by 17
Steel City I predicted a "rout" they won by 255+
Houston I predicted would win by 31 they won by 38
Phoenix I predicted would win by 77 they won by 66

Poopoohead doesn't even make predictions, so I win by default

Overall the key reasons why my ranking were better:

1) KEY GAME: Long Beach over Virginia

We both had Long Beach ranked 9th (technically I had them as #8b but not important) - poopoohead had Virginia ranked #7 and I had Virginia #12. I predicted Long Beach over Virginia by 10; in fact, Long Beach won by 17.

2) I correctly predicted 15 of 16 games and had very close scores on 6; poopoohead didn't predict games at all

Thanks sly... I know the Birds are not exactly a power house, but I would like to use the excuse of the AI... seriously a freebie, damn... Anyways, looking foward to your rankings also and good luck!

Well, you'll be happy to know in my latest rankings I've moved the Birds up to #13 - I have noted they've shown some improvement, although are still a way off from being competitive with the top 12
