These rankings are done by solving a system of linear equations using Ax=B. The matrix looks something like this....

This is the right side of the solution.

The left side are values that come from a teams performance. The final value uses things such as margin of victory (to a point), yardage differential (to a point), and who won the game.

To solve for x, I multiply both sides by the inverse of A. x is the value that is displayed as a teams rating.

Some of you are going to look at this and think....how is a team like D'Haran, 0-3, rated so high?

D'Haran's opponents are 8-1, they lost those 3 games by a total of 8 points, they played Endzone and Iceland pretty evenly and they outgained La Tourette by roughly 150 but could never convert any drives to touchdowns, settling instead for 5 field goals.

Endzone Gorillas, who beat D'Haran, are rated just behind the Legion by the smallest of margins. Endzone's opponents are 1-8.

If I had to say how to use these rankings, I would say that teams rated close to you should give you a good game while teams rated way below you should be relatively easy wins and teams rated way above you should be very difficult for you to beat.

Dang, why can't these people get their programs correct. Let me fix it.

I'm surprised at the rankings in zeta. Even after beating La Tourette, RAC is in 3rd behind La Tourette and Sicily. I know why, it's due to strength of schedule, but it still doesn't make it look any better. RACs remaining opponents are 38-22 while La Tourette's are 25-35, which means La Tourette has played a much tougher schedule to date, but still.
