I've never made an O-lineman before and was wondering which, strength or blocking, would be more important for a guard used primarily on kick/punt returns and backing up both guard positions. For that matter, do most teams carry a "balanced" guard to play backup, or do they have a backup for each position?

Usually good teams will carry a good back up for both starting guards. some team roll with one back up for both slots. that;s just a matter of taste I guess. But if you are going to play mostly on ST get the blocking up pretty high.

Thanks. I guess if there are enough teams that carry both backups then it would make sense for me to focus the player as a pass blocker instead of trying to balance him out.

For ST I'd say Strength. It's the place where pancakes are likely to matter most. You're going to be up against Linebackers etc. If you can blow up a couple you might create a big play. Currently if you just hold a guy than the Returner heads straight into the pack and gets tackled most of the time anyway.

A good point too. I think I'll watch some ST replays, particularly those of big returns to see which dynamic is in action for those returns.

I would suggest building your G just like a starter. Especially if he backs up the starters. I would probably start training speed & stamina earlier than usual but thats about the only thing I would change.
