This was posted by turnerhero in our forums and it was so good I thought I'd share with the league :

......."4th down...and long, only 1:52 remains in the game. Coach kharton surveys the field thoughtfully, and gives a single nod to his star Quarterback, Polish Rifle to go for it. Down by only one point - one point from their first ever Playoff Victory. The Punt Unit stays on the sideline as Coach kharton and a few of his key defensive players cover their eyes, no longer able to stand the suspense as their weary, but determined Offense moves to the line.

Harry Watson, Crypt Kicker Center places his right hand firmly over the pigskin, and begins barking out reads to his Offensive Line, pointing out with his left hand as he looks around and tries to see where the rush will come from. Rifle lines up behind Watson, and begins his cadence from the singleback formation.

4-2-5 are the numbers surely rushing through Rifle's head, as that's the defensive formation he's up against on this game breaking down. If those five Defensive Backs can make a play on the ball, the Kickers' playoff hopes go up in a puff of smoke, instantly.

The ball is snapped and Rifle comes back to pass! Muncie Corbin, the game's leading rusher for Crypt, hammers headlong into the line to try and put just one more split second in Rifle's pocket life, and hold the 5 man rush from getting to him. On the outside, 3 Wide and a Tight End going on routes, Rifle has a few options, but not much time.

Now the Strong Safety comes in, he's coming on a blitz as well! Rifle ends his 5 step drop and looks, but there seems to be nothing. Leeland is far short of a first down, their TE, Bernstein, jr. is blanketed by two defenders, and on the other side, Morrow and TheWind are covered tightly by their defenders, not even an inch of room!

Rifle launches it just a split second later, and it's to the left, single coverage! 10 yards past the first down marker, Flyliek Thewind puts on the brakes and turns around, his defender trying to do the same but it's too late! Thewind is WIDE OPEN, and he BRINGS IT IN! Brought down at the 47 yard line, Thewind and Polish Rifle lock up to eventually put their team into field goal position, and win the game!

Very nice, but I noticed the formation was a standard nickle, not a 4-2-5.

I suggest you look into that, because if you don't know the difference in a regular nickel and a 4-2-5, then there is probably a lot more you don't know about football.

Both formations use 4 defensive linemen, 2 linebackers and 5 defensive backs, but that does not mean every defense in that format is a 4-2-5. The difference is in the secondary.

A nickel defense uses 3 CBs 1 FS and 1 SS, like this:

FS SS

LB LB

CB DE DT DT DE CB CB

A 4-2-5 defense uses 2 CBs, 1 FS and 2 SS like this:

FS

SS SS
LB LB

CB DE DT DT DE CB

That's the way it is in the real world of football.

But the thing is we not playing real football, we playing Borts version of American Football and he says 4-2-5 (3cb's) = nickel also 3-3-5 (3cb's) = nickel. (don't beleive me, look in the defensive AI settings) So as the piece was written within the confines of GLB or Borts Football, its correct in saying nickel formation. Now you obviously get your jollies from picking holes in someone elses work and trying to justify it by giving real world examples. But its a game, we are bound by what Bort says is correct.

Personally I liked the piece written it makes the game almost come alive and I hope turnehero continues with more as the Crypt Kickers Dynasty continues, but I won't be sharing it any more as whats the point with anal retentive muppets arguing the toss.

Don't get all upset, I didn't mean any harm by my comment.

You are right that in Bort's GLB game a nickel = 4-2-5. I forgot it was labeled incorrectly in the AI. I am glad that you understand what I was saying is correct in the real world of football.

Sorry about the confusion. I thought the smiley I added would note that I was only giving you a good natured ribbing, and thank you for not making an ass out of yourself like others who commented and do not understand the game of football.

To be honest I think your team has the best coaching in the whole league. Y'all have beat several teams that had the edge on talent.

Cheers Mate!

First off PLEASE name one team above the HS level that plays a "4-2-5"...I know of ONE and they DON'T even run it. They run it as a VARIATION of the 3-3-5...The school is WVU! Now like you so much contradicted yourself and as Kharton was thoroughly describing his play...He said the QB saw a 4-2-5 as in 4 DL 2 LBs and 5 DBs. Which in your EXPLANATION what he was against was a "standard nickel"!!! Which ANY way you look at it is 5 DB's!!! I do NOT care if they line up 5 FSs...IT IS STILL a NICKEL, Since a nickel is 5 cents last I checked. And 5 DBs are 5 NON LBs and DL...So it IS in fact a 4-2-5 NO MATTER the formation! Now to CLARIFY the WVU defense they used to run under Rodriguez...It was a 3-3-5 with 3 DL, 3 LBs, 2 CBs, 2 SS types and a FS! Like so...(LEFT) and the 4-2-5 Variation (RIGHT). Which also could be called a 4-4!

But to get back to the point at hand, you CORRECTING him (Kharton) and stating that what the team was running a standard nickel, NOT a 4-2-5 was ACTUALLY still INCORRECT no matter how you look at it the d was running a formation that consisted of a 4-2-5! Yes the standard nickel WAS being ran on that play...BUT you CANNOT say he was WRONG!

Kharton also..here are some good links for you to checkout, so you can talk football with your English mates and if you are interested in playing you may find a team near you! I play for Norwich. PM and tell me where you are or post it on here and I will tell you if anyone is near you.

http://www.bafl.org.uk/ (to find a team near you if interested in playing or just watching)
http://www.gridironuk.co.uk/talk/index.php (sign up for the forum here)

But CTEC I am sure we could round for round...I KNOW you DON'T know more about football than me! At BEST you are equal in knowledge and I can accept that. So lets go ahead and kill this thread...UNLESS you want to prove that you don't know as much as you think you do....

PS you can get to the 2nd link thru the 1st one it is in the upper middle portion of the page!
