I had to get some actual work done today, so it took me a bit longer than usual to get the rankings out.

The more games we get the more the rankings seem to be sorting themselves out. I've also learned a little bit more about what stats in this game are "important" for a good team, and which ones are not. For example, the teams with the greatest number of field goals scored against them tend to be the better teams in the league. At first i thought maybe a good D would be able to even prevent a lot of these, but it seems that good D's tend to have SO many more FG attempts taken at them, that they yield more field goals. So I've taken that stat out for now, since I haven't decided how to incorporate it in a meaningful way yet.

The other thing that I've noticed for a while now is that I think my rankings are most accurate in the middle of the pack. Part of this is how I've been doing the rankings, where each team is ranked in each statistical category and then the rankings are totaled. This imposes a max and a min on the categories, which prevents a team from benefiting in my rankings from a standout performance. ie, even if the top offense averages 70 points a game, and the 2nd team averages 30 per game, the rankings still give a 1 and a 2, which doesn't allow much separation among the top and bottom teams. I've currently building a beta version of a new ranking system which will fix this issue and will reward (or punish) teams for exceptional performances in each category.

Part of why I think my rankings are getting better is that nearly every team who won today moved up, and every team losing moved down. (I didn't check all of them to make sure, but I think that's what happened from glancing at several of the rankings/games). The one thing that i don't like about it today is that Madden Nation is still ranked above Windycity, even though Madden got taken out behind the woodshed today by Windycity. I think the changes I'll be making soon will help fix this sort of thing.

Here you go, let the bitching begin! LOL

Nah...this doesn't mean anything. I'll wait until the seasons over to see if these formulas were even close to reality.

I was wondering why Windsor was number 1. Then I saw which team you were affiliated with. Figures you would put your team in the top spot even though the actual game doesn't see it that way.

7-0
Stingiest defense in the game
4/7 shutouts

Who is better right now?

We give up 10 points to the #5 offense and our D rating goes down again? Hmmm

It's not a perfect system yet please be patient. You can check out his math formulas if you have the time. I'm not happy about our D being #3 by any means. He'll tweak it more as the season goes.

I've been wondering when this would come up.

I can honestly tell you (whether you choose to believe me is another matter) that I have not tweaked the numbers in order to put any team in any position. I've tried to base the rankings and weights off of what I thought were important statistical categories.

Windsor could be 0-7 at this point, holding down the 32nd ranking, and I'd still use the same methodology to calculate the rankings.

Since you obviously think that OKC is a better team, we'll find out on the 17th.

And by "the actual game" I assume you're referring to the rankings on the standings page? The game only uses total points scored to differential between teams with the same record. So that's not much of an indicator of a better team. So if you play weaker teams, you should score more points. And OKC has. combined # of opponent wins for OKC = 19. Combined # of wins for Windsor = 24.
Average points scored against per game: OKC 9.7, Windsor 3.9
Number of turnovers created: OKC 17, Windsor 12

My point is that there are other factors that make a team "good" besides the number of points that you've scored, and my rankings reflect how teams are adding up in almost 40 categories.

So if you don't like them, then you don't have to read them. This isn't "A Clockwork Orange"

But I've gone to great pains (obviously figurative, not literal) to keep any bias out of my rankings. Hell, my own guild has told me my rankings are screwy because we're not first in Defense, even though we all think we're the best (as might have been noticed elsewhere in these forums). So you can tell me my rankings are flawed, or that you just think they are crap. But they are NOT biased towards any team, including my own.

Thanks,
StickMan

for the record i don't think your biased at all, i do think you put to much weight in SOS (and that SOS can't really be determined until this league has at least 1 full season under it's belt) but it's your formula you can run it how you like, i just think that OKC is the at worst the #2 team in the league right now and ranking teams ahead of us that have a loss on their record is way to BCS like of your formula

I'm not worried about it. I appreciate the work he does put in it. I just have to wonder why the system ranks us that way.

Props Stickman, you're getting a lot of whining over this, but continue to improve your system and update in a timely fashion. Remember ladies, these rankings are for FUN, they don't factor into anything substantial so calm down.

All he does is plug in numbers from the stats the game provides and than puts the rankings here. Now if someone wants to see a different figure put in or something figured different he asked for and accepts feedback.

So let him know what you want to see. Did we actually add in SoS now to the rankings, I do know it was discussed. All I see is OFF-Def and special teams

That's a great performance. I wish I could reward that more in the rankings. But the way the stats are laid out on the GLB website, there is not a way to include single game stats without adding a lot of extra work for me. And I just don't have that much time to do that.

And since points aren't the only thing counted in my D rankings, you probably didn't improve enough to keep pace with other teams this week.
You only got 1 hurry and no sacks this week, so you lost some points in the Def ranking there. Moving from 11 to 15th and 8th to 11th respectively.

You did pick up 3 more ints, but that only moved you from 3rd to 2nd.

The total yardage that you give up per game went up by almost 20 yards, that dropped you a few spots.

Because you played a really tough team, then you didn't end up with as good of stats as you had been putting up. You are ranked 26th in my strength of schedule component, so maybe you're defense was overranked previously.

I don't know for sure, but these are some things that I see that could help explain what's going on.

I'll keep this in mind as I'm working on the new ranking system to see if there's a way to account for this type of thing.

Thanks,
StickMan

Damn it, my cat hit the keyboard as I was getting ready to post, and it donkey'd up the thread title, so I'm reposting this so people can find it....lol

Alright, we have some big changes this week. The upset of Ft. Campbell is one, and the addition of a strength of schedule component is another factor that has led to a few changes in the rankings for this week. I actually have the strength of schedule computed based on the number of wins of your total opponents, and I've weighted this one pretty heavily (4.0) in the offense category. As the season goes on, and the teams play most of their division, the wins of their opponents should mostly balance out, and this component in the rankings will be less influential.

yep sos is in and rated prtty heavily

Looks great.

Can't believe that somebody actually had the gall to say your system is biased. Especially with as much shit as we've given you about our Defense ranking

lol

It is what it is people. It's not Gospel, and it doesn't mean you can't be good because Stickman's ranking system has you at #24

Take a glance at it, talk some smack, laugh a little and move on.
