Scrimmage Targets – Season 7

We kept tabs on some of the scrimmages O-Pro played last season in the “Branding OPL: Scrimmage Style” thread.

If you are up for continuing the theme and helping represent the OPL in games vs. other top teams in the game, here’s a list of the playoff teams (that survived the off-season) and the best recently-promoted AAA teams in each of the other Pro leagues to use as a guide when scheduling your season 7 scrims.

I haven’t inspected all of the rosters, so I don’t know what changes were made to improve or weaken most of these teams, but this should provide a good starting place when looking for teams to face-off with.

** note - we do have regional challenges (OPL vs. SAPL, etc.) still in the plans, this is just intended to be a reference for planning out other scrims if your teams are so inclined.

*** note - (rank) is referring to the final "Top Pro Teams" ranking that was published last season and that will be coming out again this year. The voting members of that forum have made an effort to gather more reps from the various leagues for this season to ensure all leagues will have a voice in the voting. Myself, lukin83 (owner of the 'Nites), and BADGERBACKER (GM of Mean Machine) are in there as reps from OPL this season.

Good luck O-Pro!

… and please post your results vs. any of these teams for us all to see.

USAPL

Long believed to be the top league in the game, the USAPL made it tough to compare them to other leagues because of their history of keeping to themselves. Some of that changed last season. A few USAPL teams reached out during season 6 to flex their muscle and take on teams from around the game. That trend looks to be growing as we head toward season 7 – the USAPL is poised to take part in at least 2 regional challenges this season (vs. SAPL, and vs. OPL) and there are whispers about a CPL challenge too. USAPL’s top team in season 6 has been sold back (Boston Nighthawks, ranked #2 overall), but they have 7 other teams returning that were ranked at one point or another last season, including 4 Top10 teams (Monmouth, Honolulu, Detroit, and San Francisco) and the Parma Burglars who were thought to be GLB’s best AAA team before reaching the Pro level this season.

CPL

CPL is a deep league, particularly in their Eastern Conference. The Arctic Bay Yetis won their 4th straight CPL title (their 3rd straight Championship Game win over Moose Jaw) and ended the year as the 4th ranked Pro team in GLB. In all, 7 CPL teams were mentioned in the final rankings and 2-3 others received some consideration during the season. The CPL has developed a reputation for not caring about their place in the game, but more and more of their teams are stepping out to take on challengers from other leagues and show how they stack up in comparison. I’m not aware of any current plans they have for regional challenges or other tourney participation.

SAPL

SAPL boasts a pair of Top10 Pro teams, including the #1 team in the game, the Santiago Benitos. Santiago did it all in season 6: 16-0 regular season, the SAPL league title, and many scrim wins against top competition. Their next loss will be big news around the game. The Krazy Monkeys were SAPL’s other Top10 team and have proven themselves in SAPL’s tougher conference. Porto Alegre, Buenos Aires, and Maracaibo were also teams worthy of Top25 mention. SAPL will face-off with SEAPL in a regional challenge to start season 7, will also take on USAPL at some point, and of course will take part in the 3rd Magellan Cup vs. OPL.

SEAPL

The East St Louis Tire Fires led the way for the SEAPL last season, winning their league crown and landing at #7 on the Top Pro Teams list. The league had a total of four teams make the final list and generally pride themselves on the relative depth of their league. They had some significant turnover this off-season, so there is a quite a bit of an unknown factor heading into season 7, but a few teams, including the Taiwan Blood Pandas and the Manila Hitmen, were considered “keep an eye on ‘em” teams at the end of season 6. They will be playing SAPL in a regional challenge and will likely go at it again with OPL after winning the season 6 challenge, 9 games to 8.

WEPL

The Berlin Ballers were clearly the class of the WEPL in season 6, finishing the season as the #11 ranked Pro Team after their 48-13 thrashing of London in the WEPL title game. A handful of other WEPL teams were interesting to watch – Korb being one that caught the eye of a few onlookers outside of the league. This league as a whole remains somewhat of a mystery, but they’re starting to get noticed and will be making an effort to get out and challenge other pro teams in season 7 to show how they rate - they’ll start with a regional challenge vs. EEPL.

EEPL

The Prague Punishers (EEPL champs), were the only EEPL team to finish the season among the Top 25 Pros. Prague played a healthy scrim schedule in season 6 and finished their EEPL run with a 47-0 trouncing of Minsk in the title game. Stalingrad Gryphon Army and the Lafayette Ragin Cajuns were other EEPL Zeta teams that got attention during the season. In Alpha, Misctanbul completed a 16-0 regular season, collected the #1 seed, and promptly exited the playoffs in round 1 at the hands of the #8 seed, MXCA. EEPL is supposed to be taking part in a regional challenge against WEPL in season 7.

APL

Thought to be the weakest of the Pro leagues, the APL had two teams get brief consideration for the Top 25 in season 6, The Last Gunfighters of Texas and the Lake Opeta Legionnaires. Those two teams met in the Elephant conference championship game where LOL won 17-10 (to avenge a 21-29 regular season loss) before going on to be upset in the title game by the #4 seed from the Lion Conference, the Cameroon Outlaws.

Yeah I'd love for the Gods to get some scrimmages against these teams, but I don't know if we're fully ready to take these guys on yet. We're still trying to figure everything out to get back into the playoffs, so I don't want to lose and hurt our reputation as a league.

Great work, Turnit!!

A question, what does (hm) mean?

Also, in the USAPL section, you put the final four as CPL:
(6) Honolulu Hurricane Warriors 16-0 <<<<<<<< Season 6 CPL Final Four
(22) Cincinnati Shockers 12-4 <<<<<<<< Season 6 CPL Final Four

Thanks for doing this!!

I have a Kicker on the Lima Beans and I know SI pretty well. He's always willing to setup scrimmages against anyone. Hell The beans and the Heat always go at it every season.

Hopefully everyone will be able to find teams on this list that they feel they can match up with. If nothing else, try a couple of the lower teams in the bigger leagues (or higher teams in the lesser leagues) just to see how you measure up and then go from there.

Sorry, (hm) meant 'honorable mention'. They were teams that received votes in the final poll, but not enough to crack the Top 25.

Fixed the CPL-USAPL thing. Thanks. (damn cut and paste)
