Alright, it's that time once again. We had a couple of tight fought games today, as well as several big time blow outs.

The combination of some people putting up big numbers today, along with a bit of tweaking of my ranking formula, have led to a couple of teams moving up pretty dramatically. Among the top movers, we have the Lincoln Navigators, moving up 4 spots to #4 this week, the Windycity Menace, who jumped 7 spots, and Recife Gulls who are starting to come on strong and have moved up 6 spots to sneak into the top 10 this week.

For the next few weeks, I'll probably be tweaking the formula (hopefully improving it ) so that will affect things slightly. I'll either be doing this by adding categories, i.e. for next weeks games (or at least within the next couple of games) I'm hoping to have a strength of schedule component added to the mix. Or, by tweaking the category weight component that I added this week, in an attempt to reflect that some categories are more important than others when determining if a team is good or not. Such as the "% of offensive possessions that you score points (TD or FG)" now counts as 1.5x a standard stat, such as yards per carry. And for Defense, I've included categories such as "% of opponent possessions that end in a punt or a Turnover" and "Average number of plays your Defense is on the field per series"

Thanks,
StickMan

I was wondering about the formula as our team has posted back to back shutouts yet we've dropped from 4th to 8th in the power rankings.

FT. Campbell Rangers win 70-0 and drop! I guess we have to win by a more convincing margin.

Looks pretty close to accurate though, regardless of how it's being calculated.

I think, if you look at the teams and who is playing who, that #1 and #2 are both about right.

Doesn't matter though.

Nothing is perfect. But I imagine by the end of the month we'll know for sure who's #1 and who will be in this League for another season.

Windsor as the #1 ST????

I think part of that is because so far we're forcing more punts than any other team in the lague, and thus get more return yardage.

shouldn't be weighted higher than PR avg windsor return yardage is 5th or PR TD's.

Yeah, I kinda thought the numbers this week would throw a few people. Most of this is due to the changes that I've made to a few categories with the weighting. And I promise that I'm not just messing with the formula to put Windsor at number 1. In fact when I was making the changes and putting in the weighting last night, I didn't even look at the teams, because I didn't want to find categories where Windsor does well and weight those more. I'm trying to make the rankings as unbiased as possible towards any specific team, because if everyone thinks that I'm doing these just to rank Windsor at #1, then who's going to care about these? I want these to be fun for everyone, so I promise I'm not trying to "rig" it.

To try and explain this a bit more with specifics, for Ft. Campbell, the new categories I added for Defense pulled you down a fair bit. The "average number of plays your D is on the field/series" category, you're ranked 13th, taking approximately 6.54 plays to get your Defense off the field, the "% of opponent possessions that result in a Turnover or Punt" you're ranked 18th, with 63.9%. That's a big one, since I've weighted it at 1.5, meaning that it counts 1.5 times as much into the rankings as a category that is weighted 1.0. You're also 14th in passing yards allowed. So I think these two stats are probably what's brought you down. So had I used the same ranking formula for last week as I did today, you would have been 2nd overall, so it didn't hurt you to win 70-0. In fact it extended your lead in the Offense category by a sizable margin. Your Off ranking score is now 1.72 where it was 2.12 last week. Since the maximum anyone could have would be a perfect 1.00 (which I don't expect anyone to ever have, as they would have to be ranked 1st in every statistical category I'm tracking), this is a pretty impressive score. Also, just to note how far ahead you are in the offensive rankings, the second place team (OKLA Thunderstorm) has a Offense ranking score of 5.84.

As for the gentlemen of Madden Nation, the addition of the weighting to the categories affected you the most on offense. I weighted rushing yards per game at 1.25, since I felt the adjustments to passing, team chemistry, and stamina seemed to have a negative impact on the passing game, therefore teams who run the ball better will be less adversely affected, so a better running game is (in my mind) a better indicator of a good team right now. You guys are ranked 18th in rushing yards per game. You're also last in the league in fumbles lost, which I've weighted at 1.15. Again, if the running game is more important, then I considered losing a fumble to be worse. You're also 21st in pancakes, which I've weighted at 1.00, but the 21st rank there will bring you down. You're also 22nd in # of punts, meaning that your offense punts that ball away a lot.

So, hopefully those explanations help. I think a fair bit of the changes in your rankings are due to the addition of new categories and the weighting I've applied. However, as with the Ft. Campbell guys, we can also see that scoring 70 points on someone does improve their offensive ranking score.

I also think that after I stop messing with/trying to improve the ranking formula (after another game or so), we'll see the changes in overall ranking being dictated by what happens on the field, as opposed to some behind the scenes changes to the calculations.

Thanks,
StickMan

Well, right now, Windsor is ranked 6th in average PR yardage, but they are first in FG percentage, and 3rd in FG's made per game. FG's made per game is weighted at 1.25, since getting points on the board is important.

The ST TD's, while weighted at 1.10 (since a ST TD can significantly affect the outcome of the game) only has people ranked 1st, 2nd or 5th right now. OKLA Thunderstorm has 2 ST TD's, so they're first. The 3 teams with 1 ST TD are ranked 2nd, and everyone else with 0 is ranked 5th. So since there isn't a lot of separation in the league for this stat, it isn't really helping or hurting anyone right now.

edit: oh yeah, and ST only counts for 1/8 of the Overall Ranking, so being first here won't necessarily boost someone over the top in the overall, although being ranked lower in it can bring someone down in the overall. See the Lincoln Navigators or the Golden State Gorillas for examples of that.

Thanks,
StickMan

Is it possible to share the raw numbers and data used to calculate this?

This is not to question your rankings, but for informtional purposes only. I would love to get my hands on this data and see where my team was ranked in every category.

Well, it's kind of a big ass excel file (not really hard drive size, but screen size), so I'm not really sure how to distribute it. Because I can't just copy paste it into the forums, cause the formatting would be terrible and anyone who looked at it would have a stroke.

Some of the pages for the categories are larger than my screen, so I could try to take a screen shot of a zoomed out excel page and post a photobucket link to that, but I'm worried the type will be too damn small.

Maybe I'll play with that later tonight, and see if I can figure out something useful.

Got any other ideas?
Because I'm not opposed to releasing the numbers.

edit: I tried making it into a Google Spreadsheet, but that doesn't work real well, since it loses all the formulas and formatting that I have in the excel doc.

Thanks,
StickMan

That was just even some of the output, that wasn't even the number crunching knitty-gritty part....lol

Just looked, your opponents are a combined 4-21....if SOS plays a factor, yikes!
