except that the dudes in american football are bigger, stronger, faster and hit each other with the same force as a car wreck at 50 miles an hour, if they weren't playing football they would probably be in prison...and if you put a rugby dude in pads they would get killed on any field in the league except maybe detroit........
If i had to be honest, Rugby guys deserve full respect.
They run around for 80 mins, WITHOUT stopping, consistantly tackling and running.
Yeah in gridiron, there are lots of impact tackles, as guys are fully fresh when they hit the field, and this can cause severe injury and some big hits, but as I say, I think rugby players play a much harder 80 mins of sport and derserve some serious big ups.
My 2 cents, the sports cannot be compared fairly. Apples and Oranges. Many people on my team have played both sports and agree with me on this. Rugby players are more protected by the rules of the game: ie. the backwards/sideways passing and lack of lead blocking means they're less likely to get blindsided. Football players need the protective equipment to decrease the likelihood of serious injury, not because they are "softer" (as many a rugby fan who's never kitted up has told me)
Both sports' players deserve respect. Incidentally, to consider yourself more manly for playing a more dangerous game is rather childish (as I have told many a rugby fan once he has tried to call me a little girl for wearing a helmet.)
(Besides which, if we're going to go down that road, hurling and Aussie rules are the most bonecrunching sports I've seen)
Hey snuggles, ask any of those rugby guys if they know what it's like to be hit by a guy in full pads. They don't only protect a player, but they protect the player hitting you, so he can hit you more squarely with more force... plus the helmet doesn't exactly feel very good.
Having played both, honestly they require different abilities. In rugby stamina is a huge part of the game, and you can get away with less size, and you techniques don't need to be perfect. In football, agility and technique is a huge part of it, where you don't need near the stamina.
I respect both games......... A little experiment tried here in Oregon Rugby team and football team played with each others rules, one american padded up smash mouth game and one non padded run your A$$ off rugby game....... American football dominated both games physically amd mentaly... tough bastards on both sides, but rugby guys earned a little more respect in the speed and hits of the game......football guys gave the respect for the tough sob's with out the gear..... Both sports are bad ass any ways.........maybe this will stir the pot, but at least here in Oregon we know what sport rules..........
I was a pretty good rugby player if I do say so myself and I'm hoping I'm not done yet as I still want to go back and play...
Now I've never played football, but the games aren't that comparable in my opinion. The types of play, the hits, everything is very different.
Football for me is like a tactical missile war. You've got troops on the ground preparing stuff, then the big strikes come down and people get fucked up in a major way.
Rugby is like World War One, you dig in and fight in the trenches for what seems like an eternity, taking whatever the game gives you and not fucking it up.
There are a few things which are comparable, but on the whole they can't be so stop the pointless debate.
The only thing I wish Football players would do more is learn to properly wrap up tackle, wrapping arms round the legs and sliding down, the amount of missed tackles unnecessarily I see is horrible.
But then again, I've never worn pads and I'm not sure how easy it is to do that in pads.

No, the pros tend to forget the basics of tackling sometimes... defiantly has nothing to do with the pads. Although we do focus more on tackling the body than the legs.
Yikes, theres me, throwing a cliché in a humorous fashion, and all of a sudden all debating hell breaks loose. Okay, to clearify that:
I didn't mean to downgrade or upgrade any of the two sports. They are both interesting and fun to watch. And whoever plays whatever, deserves respect, because any sport, even curling or quick chess take huge efforts to master.
Oh and Styxx, damn me for delivering munition used against me.
