Well the inter-conference battles are over and it's an 8-8 split. Not much to these matchups as only two games were even remotely close.
Three Not to be Tangled with
1. Hollywood Knights(1-0)
Started their season with a 33-10 victory over Baton Rouge which raises a few eyeborws. Would have expected to see more of a lopsided victory from the Knights but perhaps they can work out some kinks while still not losing a game. Don't expect much in the way of competition for them on the horizon.
Next Three Games: Minotaurs, Outlaws, Manglers
2. Warsaw Wolves(0-1)
Played a wild close game against the Darkwolves after falling behind 17-3 in the first, the Wolves rallied to down four late but couldn't quite overcome that slow start as the two teams combined for 10 turnovers and an equal splashing of big plays on both sides. Coming up two relativly easy opponents followed by an earl season showdown against Chuck Norris.
Next Three: Sidewinders, Tigers, Chuck Norris
3. Chuck Norris(1-0)
Opened their season with a blowout win over the Longhorns that came as no shock to anyone. Now they face three games with some stiffer competition though both the Manlets and Vikings are showing obvious early flaws. For the Manlets their lack of depth could lead to a blowout loss here though as physical as they have been over the past few seasons thats no gaurantee.
Next Three: Manlets, Vikings, Wolves
The Potential Contenders
4. Iberian Bocs(1-0)
Beat down the Crack Whores as if they were their pimp really just smashed them but this falls into the category of , well exactly what we expected. Expect them to hand out a couple more pimp smacks before moving on to the challenging Pirates.
Next Three: Outlaws, Manglers, Pirates
5. Misc Manlets(1-0)
Everyone's favorite slow starter got another pre-season game as they ravaged the slow build Chiefs hanging almost 100 points on them, Good job - now don't breath hard work ahead with three tough games for them.
Next Three: Chuck Norris, Hague, Vienne
6. Hague Pirates(1-0)
Another team that enjoyed routing one of the brand new teams from Alpha and did it without breaking a sweat, broke the 100 point game mark for the first time that I can remember and maybe just maybe this is Hague's year to move from Solid to exceptional. This week they won't get to show too much but after that well see 2 very important games for them.
Next Three: Manglers, Manlets, Bocs
7. Vienne Vikings(1-0)
Vienne won the battle of the Vikings and amazingly didnt give up anything but a FG. Their defense is a little bit better this season, but is it that much better? Still some questions to be answered and ....well I guess we will see. Next Three: Tigers, Chuck, Manlets
Too soon to tell on these teams
8. Pamplona Bulls(0-1)
Played close and almost pulled off an upset of the Destroyers, these guys could easilyend up in the post-season hunt if they can gell together as a team and put together some solid play. They have a chance to string together some victories if they can handle the Mamertini this week.
Next Three: Mamertini, C-Knights, Sidewinders
9. Milano Mamertini(1-0)
Ho-hum beat the Wildcats but certainly get no style points in doing so as they yielded 30+ points against a team you would have expected them to fare slightly better against, still a W is a W, and its time for them to battle the Bulls.
Next Three: Bulls, Minotaurs, Hague
10. Glasgow Manglers(1-0)
Took care of business against the overmatched Gunslingers and they needed to do so as their schedule for their next three games is pretty unforgiving, this could be their last taste of victory for awhile so enjoy it while you can.
First Three: Pirates, Bocs, Hollywood
Still need work to compete
11. Luxemborg Sidewinders(0-1)
New roster, similar results the Admirals forced the Sidewinders to walk the plank and certainly threw them overboard. No rest for the wild snakes either as they confront my Wolves before playing a game thats probably a little more winnable.
Who's Next: Wolves, Gladiators, Bulls
12. Luxemborg Tigers(0-1)
Lost to the Royals, that really suprised me until I took a look at the Royals much improved roster. Not the namby - pamby Royals they were last season so a close game makes me believe the Tigers could be on the upswing. Vienne should be on upset alert this week.
Whos First: Vikings, Wolves, Gladiators
13. Constantinople Knights(0-1)
Ouch - shut out and gave up the century mark. Take heart one of the few winnable games on your schedule comes up this week against the newly formed Gladiators.
Who's Next: Gladiators, Bulls, Minotaurs
14. Unknown Outlaws(0-1)
Got what they expected from the Playboys as they got a beat down. But with their opening schedule you can't expect too much from the Outlaws out of the gate. Give them some time and lets see what they do, but their schedule certainly isnt getting any easier.
Whos Next: Bocs, Hollywood, Mamertini
15. Athens Minotaurs(0-1)
One of these days Athens is gonna hold someone under 50 points, it's not gonna be this week though with Hollywood coming into town. Expect their defensive secondary to get lit up more than a Rockefeller Plaza Christmas Tree.
Whos Next: Hollywood, Mamertini, C-Knights
16. Roman Gladiators(0-1)
Got hammered by the Asylum and probably will here too. Just not enough players to call them a team yet, though I do enjoy the name.
Who's Up: C-knights, Sidewinders, Tigers
Week 2 Games
Game of the Week: Pamplona Bulls vs. Milano Mamertini
I just get the feeling this game is gonna matter big late. Either as a tie-breaker for a playoff spot or for playoff positioning. This one has the makings as one that'll come back to haunt one of these two. Both teams should give a good effort in the trenches. Yet I like the Bulls to have 1 or 2 more big plays in them to capture this one in a nail bitter.
Bulls 27 Mamertini 24
Must See TV: Vienne Vikings versus Luxemborg Tigers
Vienne has improved but my suspition is that the Tigers may have improved more. If they can pull off a win here they could certainly show it. Not too many people took note of the Tigers last season and not too many have done so yet this year, but Im officially putting the Vikings on upset alert.
Tigers 44 Vienne 40
Yep you should set your Tivo: Chuck Norris vs. Misc Manlets
Everyone is still trying to figure out exactly what Chuck Norris has this season(perhaps even Chuck Norris) and the Manlets are traditionally slow starters. That being said I don't think we find out much about Chuck this week but then again you never know.
