RICHMOND (RR) -- The Richmond Raiders opened their season today with a decisive victory over the Kilimanjaro Kamikaze. The Raiders were able to produce a potent offensive attack that scored efficiently and took advantage of opportunities afforded to them. The defense also stepped up and provided consistent pressure on the Kamikaze, including 8 sacks and 3 interceptions.
"This was a great first win," Head Coach Icky Thump told the Richmond Review. "We came out a little sluggish there in the first quarter, but I think the guys realized the potential that this team needed to live up to and executed."
The execution was certainly there. Richmond did not punt the ball a singled time during the game. They also were able to get a consistent ground attack going which set up QB Khari Jones for a field day against this defense.
"We were just clicking during the 2nd and 3rd quarters," Jones said in reference to the 2 quarters when the Raiders scored a combined 52 points. "We got things going on the ground and that set up the passing game so we could make some plays."
Jones finished with 478.5 yards, 5 TD's, and 80% completion.
The ground attack was led by the stellar play of the offensive line. Which opened holes for running backs Admiral Sandecker and Stormin' Norman Whitley who combined for 263 yards and 5 TD's.
"The offensive line played beyond what we expected," Sandecker said. "The guys up front were able to open the running lanes and we just took the opportunities afforded to us."
On the defensive side of the ball, the Raiders were able to create some incredible pressure. DE Phuck Mizzou led the Raiders with 5 sacks and 4 hurries.
In the secondary cornerbacks Beast Baily and Jose Foster combined for 12 passes defended and 2 interceptions.
"We stepped up to the occasion," Phuck Mizzou said. "When the D plays as a unit we do well, when we don't we struggle it's that simple. I think there are areas in which we could have improved in but overall we played tremendous."
The Raiders will look to continue their stellar play next game against the 0-1 Casablanca White Houses. The White Houses were blown out by the Red Sea Wave 63-7 and do not look to pose the Raiders any serious problems.
