I've been hunting for a defensive coordinator for two weeks now but never got anyone that I felt comfortable with so I've set out to do this and have been playing around with tactics.

Anyhow, my question is for those that are defensive coordinators or defensive tacticians is are you setting up your tactics based on formation or on down and distance?

Usually I go to formation, then various obvious situations like 3rd and 10+.

I'm pretty new to D-Coordinator as well -

but I always base
1st - off of your base Formation
2nd - check energy of your player and send out nastygrams tellling em to get that energy up
3rd - set depth charts based off of energy and what players you feel would be a better back up at that position
4th - I always set the Advanced Tactics last (down and distance stuff)

If you're talking about the AI, you have to keep in mind how it works. The sim will start at the top, checking each *input* in turn, until it finds a match, then it will pick one of the *outputs* under that input.

For example, you don't much care what formation the offense comes out in, if they are at your 1-yard-line, you want to be in goal line defense. So, the input that uses distance from your goal to describe the situation (and you can make that just the 1, 1-2, 1-3, whatever) when you want goal line defense should go above (before) inputs that are based on formation. Otherwise, if the offense came out at the 1 with a 3-WR set, and the 3-WR input came before the goal-line input, you would have the same defense as you would against that formation at midfield (bad idea).

Do you want to defend an I-formation with 1 WR the same way on 3d-and-8 as you do on 1st-and-10? These are the kinds of questions you have to figure out, and set up your inputs accordingly.
