is it more benifitial(?) to run the 3-4 to help out on the pass and to hope that your LB's will stop the RB, or is it still better to run the 4-3???

Depends entirely on personnel.
4-3 is a simple defense, that can be used to stop the run effectively, and is just fine against the pass if you've got the right coverage and schemes.
The 3-4 can stop the run just fine, assuming you've got high strength D-Linemen and extremely fast and agile OLBs, along with the right schemes. Often times, you can put the LOLB on the TE, and mix up the blitz from just about anywhere, and have a solid amount of pressure on the QB, as long as you keep them on their toes.

Lots of people fail at the 3-4 using pass-rushing DEs when they need DEs that look like DTs.
