Can it stop the run. Anyone using it? Any success?

Yes, it can. It mostly depends on your players and tactics settings, though.

Was scouting an upcoming game and saw at least a couple plays where a LB in the 3-3-5 got into the backfield on pitch plays for 3 yard losses. I know that's not the 3-4, but it's similar.

In that game the team running the 3-4 won (by 3). Held the opponent to 51 rushing yards.

Look at game film from the Silvery Moon Elves preseason game and first game of the season. The key is to have a really strong LDE and not the speed agility version most people build.

I agree, there are just badly built DEs for the job. There are much better 4-3 DEs than 3-4 on the market let alone the sheer limited amount of 3-4 DEs

you need strong DE's to run a 3-4 anyway..thats how you stop the run. You have strong enough D-line to make gaps and help stuff the run and your 2 inside linebackers to come bursting through the holes and if they go outside..that's where you speedy outside guys roam..so that's a no go too

I would never run a 3-4 defense because DE are only great when they are agile and fast. When you have 5 lineman (possibly more) playing those guys you are going to get dominated

That depends on what you mean by "stop the run". These days, that's a little hard to calibrate. I will say the number one problem I've seen is teams not setting their blitz percentage high enough. By rule, anyone attacking the Oline not a defensive lineman is a blitzer. Thus, you should be setting your blitz percentage very high. The upside on the 3-4 is you can shut down specific areas of the Oline through AI tactics. You also have to have the right players. I wouldn't put a DE at 3-4 DE spot. Go DT and take the position hit. That's just my opinion though. We've had some success against much higher level teams with it. Hope this helps.

the 3-4 D works in the NFL because:
-the NT has lots of strength and draws 2x teams on every play; he is also an excellent run stuffer
-both the DEs are run stuffing DEs; the DEs can also be pass rushing DTs who have enough strength to play at that position
-the ILBs are both strong guys, and play well against the run
-the OLBs are good pass rushers; teams in the NFL often use speedy pass rushing DEs in this spot

those are pretty high demands to fit the 3-4. in GLB, no one really had their builds adjusted to plan for the 3-4, so not many 3-4 Ds will work.

in order for the 3-4 to work well, all these conditions must be met, but many teams are trying to use the 3-4 despite not meeting these conditions

my team has never allowed more than like 14 points using the 3-4

You let up 185 rushing yards in your loss today, if you're talking about the Showboats

As for the 3-4, I don't have any personal experience with it but I imagine the guidelines people above me have pointed out are good. You need a good strong line including strong DEs with agility, not so much speed. Linebackers would have to be quick and with high vision.

Why would you run the 3-4 in running situations when you can set the AI to bring you into a 4-3 for those situations and go back to the 3-4 the rest of the time?

It doesn't have to be all or nothing.

Because we only have 1 depth chart and the requirements for each position are very different.

3 DT's and 4 LB is very effective.

Agreed.

I actually was going to put my Run-Stuffing DT at the NT position, and then use the Pass-Rushing DT at the LDE position. Haven't been able to play around with it yet, but I have the LB for the ILB positions. I really wish I wasn't on vacation during the scrimmage time, I couldn't play around with the 3-4 like I wanted to.

After the pre-season letting the 3-4 run wild we got beat by two tough teams, including having the 2nd team run very effectively on us. I then created a hybrid 3-4, 4-3 defense which uses a mix. Mostly 4-3 on running downs with some 3-4 with run blitzing LBs and 3-4 on passing downs. We shut out a higher ranked opponent holding them to ~150 yards.
