Greaaaat...and a stickied thread too? This is going to be in every team forum in GLB. There are teams with lesser levels but also happen to have GMs that already understood 90% of what's posted here, and now, that advantage may be comprimised. I appreciate the thought that went into this, but I think this thread will hurt me more than help.

I vote to DELETE!!!

strong safety is always the cover guy in 1 man shell..

hence the term "free" in Free Safety.

I understand your concern, but I took great care not to speak to the specifics of stopping any particular threat. This is by no means an in depth tutorial of defensive technique. It is, as was mentioned, simply a discussion of basic defensive concepts. The intent was to get everyone to a baseline understanding from which to develop a sound scheme. If I thought I was giving away a competitive advantage, I would not have posted.

So "underneath coverage" means CB's/LB's? I was under the impression it was just LB's.

So if you had a Dime set running Cover 2 and Man underneath, would result in Cover2 Man? As in your 4 CB's would man up on the WR's while the Safeties would cover their respective zones over the top?

S'pose that makes sense.

You're correct. The only shells that include CBs are the C3 & C4.

Of course, you may occasionally see a DE (or even a DT) in underneath coverage, but it's not something you would do often. I can't recall seeing a DE cover in man in GLB, but I have seen many in zone. And I can't recall seeing a DT in coverage at all in GLB, but I assume it is possible.

For example, a CB is up against a great WR and his focus is set to PASS. You have a call designed to attack the run and set the AI focus to RUN. You have overridden your CBs tactics.

Are you sure that's right? The 'Play Focus' setting says 'Run (stack the box more)' and 'Pass (stack the box less)'. So it sounds like it just moves around where players line up, not their actual player tactics setting.

You may be correct in this. I am going strictly off my reading of it, not direct knowledge.

What I do know is a LB with Run focus set in his personal tactics behaves similarly to one in a play set to Run focus. The same is true of Pass focus.

From what I've seen in 3 games so far, this does appear to be the case.

The play focus affects where they line up, individual tactic (+ run, neutral, + pass) affects the individual's vision and ability to spot the play earlier/before it's too late.

This is correct. The setting does not override the players advanced settings. It simply determines how far back your coverage/players line up.

Great job Satchmo! This will be a big bonus for the new coordinators that don't understand the basics.

Satch and all,

So we got a box callout (pass, run, neutral) and that affects the location for lineup - what does the coverage distance box do then? Is that basically the "how far they are back to backpedal box" or something? What function does this thing have?

Sorry, I may have a newbie question.
What is defense shell mean?
And what is cover0,1,2,3,4? I still don't understand after reading this thread. (Im actually new to american football too but enjoy this game)

So cover 0 means no any defensive players will cover any opposite players?
Cover4 means 4 defensive players will cover 4 opposite players individually?
