Good grief. I can't believe I cannot wrap my old brain around this so here goes...

Ok... so I've been asked to do something I'm not sure is doable. 55 yard FG's.
From what I know there's the Max Distance box where you can put in ANY number... and the packages where you can only adjust the LOS in 5 yard increments. It even says to add +17 yards to the LOS to calculate the Max Distance.

So... my question is... if I put 55 in Max distance but the LOS inside the package says 40 yard line... then won't the kicker still try from 57? (LOS + 17) Of does the Max Distance over-ride everything and whatever number is in the box is the longest the kicker will try from. Doesn't that create a down and distance clash inside the packages then?

I have never tried to do anything other than LOS + 17 and put that into the Max Distance box... so I don't know. Anyone wanna help an old addled brain out?

I don't care about max distance at all. I put the yard line I want in the AI (usually 40) and that's all, 57yards FG max. Never put anything in max distance box, surely is another Borf trick to mess things!

The only reason to set anything other than the max distance box, that I can generally think of, is if you want to try extra-long desparation field goals in situations where you're still within either 5 yards or 10 yards of your max setting.

For example, you can have a 4th quarter only input for FGs, where if the clock is under 20 seconds and is running, you're down between -1 to -3 points, and you're out of timeouts, you could choose on the Special Circumstance input either Near FG Range (5 yards) or Near FG Range (10 yards). This will allow you a little more flexibility for circumstances like this, where you would rather try a longer FG than usual than risk running out the clock. It doesn't have to be only for this situation, but this is a most likely/useful one, I think.

You don't have to mess with the Ball Spot/Yard Line input for it, it works off of the overall Max Distance you set for all FGs in that one box at the top.

The other way to do it is the way Ken does it, where any FG inputs use the Ball Spot/Yard Line inputs. If you make a complicated set of these, it just takes longer to update them all as your Kicker gets more range, is all.

Agree Slughead. Only reason I use Max Distance is just for that purpose.

@Ken; Was the way I learned it from someone else way back when. I simply have never questioned it because it seemed logical.

Sounds like, so far, Max distance takes a back seat to the Input settings. I just have never had Max Distance set differently than Input settings so a LOS setting of 40 yard line means I set Max distance at 57 yards to match up... unless, like slughead says (and so do I) that you want the option of longer tries in key game situations (like late 4th quarter and behind by 3 points). But still always matching up Max Distance with all LOS Input settings. I was just wondering what would happen if I changed the Max Distance to a non-matching number such as 55 (because you cannot set LOS inside a package at 38 yard line). I mean, the thought of the two being different and causing Bortgasms in the AI because there's a 2 yard variance... I dunno... smells like bad juju.

As slug said, I have some inputs for end of half and end of game (with or without time-outs) and never failed me. Agreed, have to change all these inputs as a kicker start from rookie to Pro but I trust what I do and never trust Bort and his inputs to decide my kicking range.

I use to do that then I just made copies of my AI's and set the FG ranges for each level so now I don't have to update for FG ranges every season. So I have 3 of each AI... 37 yards (rookie and half way into 1st season)... 47 yards (rest of 1st season and until end of/half way through 3rd season)... and 57 yards for everything beyond then. Saves me a lot of headaches.
