I was never really Kobe's biggest fan, but I could never deny his insane talent for playing basketball or his relentless desire to become the best at everything he tried to do. As he got older and more mature, he seemed to realize that push for perfection should include his off-the-court life too, and he certainly seemed devoted to his wife and children towards the end. In his case, the best may truly have been yet to come, and it saddens me greatly that his life was cut short like this. 41 is way too damn early. And for his bright young daughter to go even earlier... God, my heart breaks.

As a father, this news hits me a lot harder than I was expecting it to.

Hug your kids.

Always rooted against him being a spurs fan, but as a father this hits hard, I can only imagine what he was thinking when they were going down.

I'm not sure if anyone on the chopper ever knew anything was wrong. There are reports and evidence that the chopper was flying in heavy fog and flying at a high forward rate of speed when it collided with the hillside. That would suggest to me that the pilot was flying through a familiar area, thought the path ahead was clear, and simply made a catastrophic misjudgment about where they were in relation to the surrounding hills. That's speculation on my part, though... we'll know more as the crash investigation continues.

But yeah, before we knew more details, I assumed some sort of engine trouble and a fall from the sky, and I was shaken by the same thought as you.

TMZ released a recording and ATC told them they were flying too low...which I'm no pilot but dont the on board controls tell you your altitude? If it was a familiar area one would think he know how high he had to be....

I believe ATC was referring to them being too low for communication signals to clear the terrain. When they were handed off to SoCal if seemed they never responded or their signals were being blocked. They stated their attitude as 1200. I am surprised they didn't have collision alert/warning hardware. The transcript said they were flying VFR which is a no no in fog. By the time they finish the investigation there shouldn't be any mystery.

I'm in communications and navigation for the air force and there are absolutely systems that should have popped off and made the pilot realize what was happening, in any case, those systems could have been buggy due to signal attenuation due to the fog, either way, diagnostics on a flight crash can take up to a year to get back, so we won't know exactly what happened for awhile. My guess, the Terrain avoidance system that alerts the pilot when they're to close to the terrain wasn't popping. Big bummer.

The "too low" audio was in the context of whether or not the air traffic controller could see them on radar... control was basically saying no, you're flying too low for the radar to pick you up. It wasn't meant to be a warning that their altitude was unsafe.
