First time building a Cov LB, how should it’s end build look like?

Currently working on Vision.

There's no single answer to this.

Is the LB supposed to run with 160+ speed TEs, or are DBs used for that?

If I were doing a cLB today, Vision would be my top natural attribute, like high 90s at least. Then Agility and Speed would be about equal in the mid 90s. Jumping would be next. Also if you go Vision first, you don't need to be 220 pound speed bump.

All 4 AEQ go into Speed, and Super Vision is the first bonus SA with Zone Focus added in if possible.

Just let the LB live in the "under" zones. Be able to change targets as fast as possible. Don't worry about the deep stuff. There should be a safety able to get to anything thrown that far down field.

Firstly, talk to your DC. Otherwise, it depends what type of CLB your building.

This. You need to know WHAT he plans on your LB doing and who he wants it to cover. TJ's pretty spot on. Vision and speed are probably the top 2 skills you need most.

Vision is more dependent on if your picking sixes. Otherwise I usually equally it with agility and then do a lot of planning for jumping/strength/tackling/catching/stamina/confidence/SA’s (not necessarily in that order).

Keeping on the topics of Linebackers, which additional SA do you all prefer for a force-fumble build: Big Hit or Head Hunter?

Head hunter. What is Big Hit going to do that Monster Hit can’t do and with a bonus!? The other additions I’d do if enough SP’s are First Step and Aura. Oh, and Shed Block. Quite the stretch of SP’s for SA’s, and that’s after you’re comfortable with how the build looks.

I had looked at that for my hhLB too. The way I read it was, that when moving near HIS top speed, he'd get the bonus. Which seems nice not having to build a 150+ speed LB to get the big collisions.

Never thought about it like that, but I bet (no idea really) the bonus from HH is smaller than the bonus from a big collision.

Imagine just doing an 80 speed LB, it would be hard not to get the bonus.

I should probably read it again before spouting off too much

Thing is that while the SA will fire at the dot's speed level (whatever that may be)... therefore, yes, you would get the bonus, but then you're counting on the bonus to make up for the other parts of the equation. I'd have to go digging in my links and notes but, off the top of my head, I seem to remember that Fumbles are as much SA's and VA's as it is speed and mass at the time of the collision. My memories are of old discussions about HH LB's on ST's to cause fumbles and that Bort said (no quotes here because it's my old memory) that the weight of the dot making the hit vs the weight of the dot getting hit... plus the speed of the tackling dot combined with the speed of the dot being tackled (which is why head on collisions produce more fumbles than any other)... was an important part of the whole 'tackle/fumble equation'. So you might not want to build a slow dot just to get the bonus. 150 sounds just about right as a lower level speed for a LB, IMO.

Indeed. Now imagine an 80-Speed LB actually being in position to make tackles.

Actually, you might HAVE to imagine it.

How many FF are you all expecting to get anyway for a HHLB?

If an LB has 80 Speed, I would expect that they would be built like a D-liner and be a part of the D-Line. How many FF's do they get?

My memory of weight is that it is a small factor in the FF calculation. Tackling being a much larger part.

Trying to be a shoulder charger tackler sounds like you'll miss the player more than you'll get the player. Too risky.

This turned into a good discussion.

There definitely are variables for player weights, velocity at moment of impact, also angle of collision.

Given the wording, I would assume Bort intended it to be an equalizer for smaller DBs. What I would guess is that it changes the equation to add a bonus to the velocity component of the equation, like maybe the dot is considered to be moving 10% faster or whatever.

Everything here is pure speculation.

So while it would help a slower dot, the benefit would be greater for a faster dot.

In addition to that HH also gives a bonus to MH and BH, which give a bonus to forcing fumbles themselves.

It's probably good for every dot interested in forcing fumbles.

The question becomes, "should your dot be interested in forcing fumbles?"

I don't think so. Granted this is lower leagues but the play type is still relevant.

http://glb.warriorgeneral.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=2986176&pbp_id=267856

There's 2 different styles of hhLB on this play. If the MB was slower maybe he doesn't charge straight into the line to get blocked. Maybe if the MB was positioned farther back, he would get there at the perfect time. In any event, the HB is pretty much coming at him. On most inside runs the MB is within a couple steps of where the runner is going.

It might be interesting to specifically build a LB to only clog the inside running Lanes from the MB alignment. Or it could cause excess ass pain, once every opponent figured out off tackle was the way to go.
