If someone requests that you send an electronic copy instead of a PDF, what does that mean? I thought a PDF that wasn't printed was considered an electronic copy of a document but I am computer illiterate.

Possible the person that requested the electronic copy and not PDF is confused as well since he is even older than I am.

my guess is the latter. electronic copy just means it's an electronic file as opposed to a paper copy. could be any filetype, but pdf's are common, especially if you're not looking for the other party to edit the document.

There could be specific types of software involved

Like when I bought my house, I had to do legally binding electronic signatures. I couldn't just edit a PDF or print, sign and scan

I'll try to clear up the meaning but I am assuming he wants to edit it and maybe he can't if it is a pdf?

probably cannot. there are some versions of pdf's that are editable depending on the acrobat version, but I'm guessing that's not what is being asked for.
what's the document? do you have it in a version that's not pdf? something like a word doc?

Normally an electronic copy (word file, declined spreadsheet) are editable and PDFs are not.
