yes it is. the only reason those teams are successful are because they were CPU owned. that means they retain the AIs from their old owners. once a human buys the team, everything is reset. which means that every team that you (and many others) buy will instantly suck. so not only will you screw up league survivor, but every player on that team who doesnt get out when they can. there's only one way to buy a gold trophy and no one is impressed when you do, in fact, quite the opposite.
