Which would be more useful on a moderately strong blitzing LB?

Closing speed only works in zone coverage (if i read it correctly) and once you get within a certain distance, shuts off.

Neither. First Step, Disguise Blutz, Blitz, something else.

Agreed neither. Might add Head of Steam to Sonic's list there, but First Step would be first priority for me if you don't have it already, as a blitzer.

Agree on 1st step. You want to burst to top speed ASAP if you're gonna beat the blocker and get to the QB before he reads the blitz and throws.

closing speed always works as long as you are 5+ yards away. any closer and it turns off. but i agree that 1st step gives a bigger initial boost.

QB doesn't count as a ball carrier, unless he pulls it down to run though. Closing Speed has zero effect for blitzing, Q&A - 11/12/2011

Likewise, it doesn't really help in zone coverage before the pass, just running down the receiver after the catch is made. The speed boost is based on relative position to the ball carrier ... no ball carrier, no effect. The SA description is kind of misleading - should say it's good for stopping YAC when playing a porous zone defense. lol

It is rather nice ST coverage guys though.

It's for this reason I've never liked it much. I've seen it do this... the defender closes until if gets within 5 yards... not close enough for a diving tackle but close enough to turn off Closing Speed... which makes the defender fall back beyond 5 yard gap... where it turns back on again... off again.. on again, ect, ect, ect. Very frustrating to know you spend a lot of effort in the SA only to have it laugh at you like that. The only time I thought it would really be worth it is of your defender is one of the fastest dots on the field. Would mean you make the tackle sooner rather than later.

the pain of the extra energy/breath drain each time it activates would be a pain to watch

IMO best use case is for secondary dots in run support.

Like you can play a FS way the F out in deep zone, but when it's a weak side run, he'll close in faster saving a few yards. because the offense is still running at him it doesn't matter when it shuts off.

but yeah, it can be pretty much useless when the offense is running away from you. on off on off.

I like this use of Closing Speed/Shutdown Coverage.

If you use it on a dot that's already faster than the guy he's chasing then that's not a problem.
Safety with 110 speed + trackstar 4.95 + 55EQ = 170~speed + ZoneFocus (until he sees pass) then Ballhawk (until caught or dropped) then Closing speed from the center of the field in cover1.

First Step
Tunnel Vision
Shed Blocks
Disguise Blitz
Blitz
Head of Steam

is my preference in order. obviously very subjective, and if you can only get a few points in TV it drops on the list, as more points both makes it better and makes it activate more often.

Head of Steam sounds amazing but it's extremely rare for a blitzer to not get engaged by a block when an OL sees them coming. And while I see it happen on CBs from time to time when disguise fires, LBs almost always have to fight through at least one block. So for Lbs I tend to lean towards the things that will help them break those blocks fast.
