So it's been a while since I owned a team that graduated to the next level. I'm OCing for a team that plans to level up from Rookie for S73. We've got some Day40 players, I assume Prep works to keep them, or is it University?

Your Rookie team will automatically mover to Prep (probably #3 if there is one)
without you or any of the GMs needing to do anything. Any player who is 40d old
(or younger) at this season's end will be able to sign with your team as a FA, or re-sign-
which any player currently on the roster can already do for next season. Don't worry-
it all happens just as easily as it should. The one thing i recommend: make sure you
have contract extensions sent out now! You lose a point of Team Chemistry for every
player whose contract expires at the off-season, and another point for every new player you sign.
Therefore, the players who are staying with the team, you will want them all to re-sign before day 40

Tell ya what, I'll make sure to post trigger warnings for my trigger warnings before I post them. I wouldn't want anyone to feel uncomfortable.
