Last, but not least, I can remember the Flutie Play of the 'reverse fake punt' where they would line up as if going for it on 4th down, with Flutie at QB in shotgun mode, then if the other team didn't drop their safeties back far enough, he'd drop kick (punt) the ball over their heads ... no returns. Genius.

Doug Flutie did convert a drop kick. But it was for an extra point. True no return, but this was for points, not a punt.

Might be thinking of Randall Cunningham? He was an All American punter his first two years in college. They pulled 20 surprise punts with him in his NFL career, and his 91 yarder against the Giants (aided by wind + a nice bounce that fooled the safety that ran back to return it) is still the 3rd or 4th longest in history.

His average punt during his time in Philly was about 3 yards longer than the typical highest punt average in the league, granted if they had tried it more often, would've lost the 'sneaky' factor.

I saw that game on live TV. My dad (hardcore Giants fan) almost shat a brick.

I totally didn't appreciate Cunningham at the time, but looking back, he was an amazing player.

Could well be. I do remember Flutie's extra point but I had thought he'd done a Pooch punt before that happened? Yer askin a lot of this ol' brain to remember all that stuff from that long ago. I remember watching the longest game (KC vs Miami) but I don't remember much about the game anymore. Too many years gone by.

Nah. That's where, if you have both an alert enough front line with great hands, you can call 'fair catch' and catch either a pooched kick or a low liner and wherever you catch the ball you get one 'free kick try' at a FG. No body trying to block it or anything... just a free shot at a (highly likely) very long FG. I've never seen it (although it might've been) tried in my time but there has to be a reason for the rule and somebody has had to have tried it.

This is why most/all onside kicks are kicked into the ground first, eliminates this rule and circumstance. It stops kicking the ball directly at a player full force and expecting him to catch it from 10 yards away. It made for a high reward if they did catch it.
