this is very specific and not a general discussion on cpu players (they suck). looking for people have actually tried it out or something similar. it has no bearing on the league but i'd like to be able to play some competitive scrims and have a small chance to at least win 1 tourny game.

age group: 160 day (nat minors)
so the FA market is now picked clean. while I have day 160 starters, at appropriate levels, I'm debating on which would be better for some back up playing time: a cpu player, or a day 120 level 42. obviously, players with ELs under 42 are just out of the question, and if the EL was 50ish, they could hold their own as backups. but what about those whose ELs are at 42 or just over. Do they have any value at all? I'm using some 42s on ST and they seem to be horrible and I love their builds as level 42s. I'll be keeping the number of CPUs under 9 so they'll have the minimal cpu penalty.

last season, our mutt team was pretty evenly split between day 120s and 80s, and the 80s and cpus really seemed to be outplayed by opposing CPUs. so this season, we split them as much as possible by age into 2 teams. so i'm leaning towards using cpu players, but just wondering if any one has had any relevant experience with this scenario. the exception seems to be punters and kickers with the cpus definitely being better until reg pro, or maybe semi pro.

I'd go with CPUs over under-leveled dots.

About midway through S68, I bought a Rookie team mid-season and managed to fill it about halfway with human dots; the rest were CPUs. The purpose of the team was just to dust off my old AIs, but we were oddly competitive and managed to make the playoffs as a 3-seed. The 2-seed had 55 human dots, but their builds and game-planning were both awful, and we actually upset them in the playoffs! Aaaaaand then we got whacked by 100 in the second round when the 1-seed took us down.

Anyway, the CPUs did fine as backups. Not great, but okay. You'll lose (badly!) to any team that has decent human dots and takes you seriously with their game plan. But against someone with bad builds or zero cares, you might have a chance. Remember, the CPU dots will scale up, and the underleveled human dots won't.

This right here is the key. If you only need 9, then CPU. If you need 11 then 9 CPU + 2 lower level or empty slots.

iirc, 10 is the magic number to a gigantic mystery penalty to the team. I have no idea if it kicks in at 10, or over 10. So 9 is a great plan.

I believe the ass pain comes from the buff lower level leagues get making the dots look much better than they are. The higher the league "in theory" the less bad younger dots will be, because levels will be closer, and the league buff is lower.

The two things most important besides this;

All that said, just how much do you (and team mates) care about season... realistically? Can you not only compete but make a run in the playoffs? If so then, yeah... go CPU dots over Human. If not... if this is just going to be a learn and build dot season , then I'd actually give homes to wayward dots over CPU's as it's tough enough out there and it's always better to be with good agents than without.

this is really just for the tourny. if we dont win the league full of cpu teams, then i'll hang up my owner's cap. i've been preaching for years that there is zero reason for a mostly full human team to lose to a cpu team in the playoffs. while i didnt have a full team last season and it was a mixture of day 80s and 120s, i was still pretty pissed that we lost a game our chem was like in the upper 50s i think it was at that point. we beat the team earlier and then again in the playoffs, but that 1 game, neither the defense nor offense worked, and their cpus seem to play like the 120s and just overwhelmed our 80s and cpus. this season might be interesting because of the lack of offensive linemen, i have 1 c, 2 g, and 1 t, plus a lower level t.

the goal of these teams is to give everyone the best opportunity to shine. quite a few players from last season's team got picked up whereas I had gotten them all from cpu teams or FA. so while the importance of winning is so so, for them to shine, I want to make sure there are no weaknesses that will affect their performances. then at the end of the season, i give a bunch of interested owners gm access and let them recruit. it's like a glb-wide farm team. if an owner wants to see how a player does in a particular scenario, and the player is ok with it, i'll try it out. being on cpu teams, players are stuck frequently playing against their builds, power HB running sweeps, pqb sneak, rTE blocking, bTE receiving etc. whereas i try my best to utilize their build. it's also fun to run goofy plays that serious teams would never run, like the 1 yd TD pass to the bTE, or using a hybrid p/k, etc.
