This. Any Skill Points you spend on Special Attributes early on will make your Automatic Level Gains less efficient. Your dot will play better right then, but will quickly start falling behind and will be a joke by National Pro or sooner. Been there, done that with my earliest dots.

You can, of course, use Custom Equipment and Advanced Equipment to add to your Special Abilities early on. That won't hurt your ALG gains. But do NOT spend SPs on SAs until your build is just about done, like ProKop said.

Calculate how many SP you need for the SAs required for you build.
Use the above approximation chart to find at what level you will still have that number of SP remaining to come in the future.
Be sure to complete all the attributes in your build including stamina, confidence, etc by the time you hit that level.
Us the remaining SP for SAs.

It might also help you to realize how much SAs cost in terms of levels so that you sharpen your choices.

thanks for the handy chart, now i don't have to keep doing the same math over and over
I think all my guys i'll have to start buying at end on season 6, possibly even a level before that
even my C i anticipate ~85 sp cost for SAs, my QB and WR ~90...
that may be a lot, but i should have everything good to go by then
