I'm also intrigued to see what people go with.

For the punter, probably a mix of distance and hang time, leaning towards distance. For the return team, definitely distance for more room to make a return.

If you have got decent Gunners I always go with -100 for maximum distance.

simple answer is work with your coverage team.

if they suck, you need more hang time to get more fair catches

the more they can run, the higher distance you can go.

maybe if you're facing some epic PR, then dial more hang time.

or just leave it in the middle and forget it like most Ps do

the idea for the punter is to limit the returns LOL

Early on in the career, distance hurts the punt team because it doesn't give them a lot of time to get down field. Later in the career when speed is a lot higher, distance is good because it plants the ball further down field and the punt team is fast enough to get down field in time.

At the same time, hand time early in career is better because it gives more time for the punt team to get down field, but it means shorter punts. Later in career, hang time is pretty useless as you're wanting to put the opposing team in a longer field position.

I got a punter right now and have it set at +50. It's a rookie league, so not a good basis but the average return for their returners is 7.yards. Last game was 2.8 yards (but it was a CPU so that explains it more).

Hangtime early in career... distance later. Early on it's too easy to outkick the coverage because they lack speed and agility so the returner can catch and go right past them (now and then). Later in the career, once the coverage team starts getting much better, distance works well. Seric is pretty spot on.

Where can I find what the punt return avg. is against your punter?

No facts to support it, but I always felt my dots were much better at directional punting with less power. I have always gone with about the middle of the slider. Too much hang time definitely shortens your punt distance, but a coffin corner punt can completely change a game.

It's called do the math yourself. Go to each game, add up how many returns they did. Also add up how many yards they gained in total. Then divide the total yardage count by the number of returns. That gives you the average return allowed.

For example: Your punter Austin Aviles has an average of 13.25 yards allowed in punt returns (not all on the punter but tweaking your punting style may help lower that number)

Will do! I have looked at league stats, etc. Figured as much! Thank you!

I have 14.90 but it has been improving every week. Would like to get it near your 7.

Actually, I'd be far less interested in return yards against than %'s of fair catches vs total punts and the AVERAGE NET yardage overall. You could, through settings, make it so that the punts would either be short returns or fair catches... but your NET average would be low because you'd be punting short and high all the time (max hangtime). Or you could do Max Distance and get booming punts... but longer returns because the returner would have more room to catch and return before coverage got to him. The best is to find the sweet spot in between... the most distance you can get that allows the coverage to be right there when the returner catches the punt... forcing a fair catch (no return at all) or a quick tackle (minimal return yardage). That sweet spot is hit by setting the punter to the distance that most likely causes that effect (ball arriving to returner at the same time the coverage team does). This will give you the best results. Gotta watch a lot of replays to get that right. Worked for my last punter very well.

keep in mind, my punter has had at least 2 CPU returners. So that definitely has an effect on my numbers.
