Is open man for more of a short passing game, like 5 wr so the qb will react quickly to an open man? And route distance more for deep throwing so the wr is as deep as a qb can throw and hopefully open before he throws it?

Open man = If it's 3rd and 9, and the WR comes open at 5 yards then that's where the ball should go. The rest is on him to pick up.
Route Distance = If it's 3rd and 9, and the WR is supposed to run a 10 yard route, then that's where the ball should go.
It's kind of a dumb thing to have. Sometimes, you'd prefer the open man, sometimes you really need the WR to get to the sticks. It's another reason to carry 2 passing QBs.
With 2 QBs you can do separate favorite targets, tailor bullet vs loft for situations, and also open man.
