I think you are missing the point in the OP's suggestion you would be wasting your money to pay for his subscription up-front, with the exception of the potential added free player the suggestion is only working to come close to matching the discounts you get in the existing GLB flex packages... so it goes without saying that if you had the ability to fork over a few hundred bucks that it would serve you right to just buy the existing package.
The subscription is not aimed at someone with the capability of doing that, it basically is a long-standing method to keep otherwise fading interest in a casual customer either maintained, or at the very least invested.
