Maybe because Michigan has a better track record versus SEC teams so they tend to get the benefit of the doubt when choosing between the top 2 B1G teams?

UM is 13-7 versus SEC, and OSU is 5-11-1

How about we go back to when the BCS started in 98, since that is most often considered "modern" football.

UM since '98 is 7-4 vs SEC
OSU since '98 is 2-5

And leather helmets went out in '39. During the leather days you got 2 of your 5 wins versus the SEC... so only 3 whole wins since helmets were made from plastic.
That is the epitome of success right there...

I'm not even a Ohio State fan, but you're crazy if you think recent current relevance between the two programs is roughly equal. Ohio State's last national championship came in 2014, whereas Michigan won its last national championship in 1997.

Larry, the issue being discussed wasn't how good OSU is or isn't, only that they have trouble beating SEC teams traditionally.
Even they, as an organization would have to admit that if they were being honest.

And while OSU beat Bama, Michigan also destroyed Florida in their bowl game, a team they have never lost to and is usually one of the best SEC teams year after year.

My argument wasn't whether UM would win anything, only that it is my opinion that UM gets better pre-season rankings than OSU because they have a better track record of beating SEC teams, while most of the country considers the SEC the best conference in football.

As jj mentioned, I was referring to h2h against the SEC, not overall record. That alone is enough to have some SEC voters vote for Michigan over OSU in pre-season rankings.
We could also take into account the hiring of Jim Harbaugh, who is a known commodity that brings success to every program he coaches at.
Hoke got some great players, but Harbaugh got more out of their potential than Hoke did (keeping Mattison was pretty smart though as the D-line was still great before Harbaugh).

I will concede that UM sucked balls with Dick Rod as the coach, hell I was one of the biggest opponents of ever hiring him in the first place. Spread offense is NOT Michigan football. And then there was the Appy State game...
Hoke was a great D-line coach (not as good as Mattison though), but he really had no business being head coach, at least not at Michigan.

agreed

Michigan's pre-season rankings have sucked the past few years and deservedly so - they haven't been a "pre-season ranking champ" of any sort

they are ranked higher than OSU in many polls now due to Michigan returning a ton of starters and most of OSU's went to the NFL

I'd feel better about the match up if it was earlier in the season - by "The Game" no one will be inexperienced

THIS! As the 2014 season proved...though yes...though OSU still had more than 6 returning starters that season.

At this point in the season...not knowing how the team will gel...or more importantly how the OLine and WR's will play/grow up...you have to give the lead to TTUN...though they do have a QB question mark that OSU does not completely have. Most of their Great Defense has returned though...and adding the DC from the #1 defense in the nation last season is a plus as well as the #1 Recruit from last season...who happens to play defense...and who I feel is a STUD.

I wouldn't use the vs SEC thing completely though...some times it also depends on who the SEC opponent was that season. In the last 3 "still using the same outcome from the actual game" games I remember OSU playing against the SEC it was always the #1 team in the SEC each of those seasons...and they are 1-2 against those 3. I am ignoring the Arkansas game completely for this comparison...because the result of that game was altered due to Tattoo Gate.

I don't have all of the games to look at this second or do I care that much...but the last TTUN win against the SEC was against the best in the weaker conference...by a team with a phenomenal Defense...and one of the worst offenses in the nation...in a much weaker half of the SEC...so it really wasn't the #2 team in the conference...kind of like Iowa wasn't really the #2 team in the Big 10 this past season either...and Wisconsin wasn't the year before.

I also remember not long ago a TTUN team going against what ended up being a #1 Alabama team...and it was pretty ugly as well...similar to the drubbing of USO vs Florida 10ish years ago.

And as I repeatedly have to point out to TTUN fans up here in this state...it is about recent history...not the history of the team (I don't care if it's the winning-est team in college football history...the last 50 years is no where near as pretty as the first 50...though still pretty good). And YES...the Harbaugh change does affect them having much of a "History" to look at...because his sample is so small at this school...and his being there is thrown in everyone's face almost daily...and proves it makes a difference.

To be fair, the Alabama game you mention was in that period of time when UM had one of those 2 coaches that never should have been there in the first place.
They did lose though...

Not going to argue with you there...

And that made remember the 4th SEC team we played in recent years...against Florida...during our 7-5 season between Tressel and Myer when we were just horrendous...and had a Head Coach who never should have been a head coach either.

Just like our Hoke/Rich Rod years

Now hopefully a long run of good seasons for both to make for some great end of season games
