I think the long and the short of it was that Bort did not believe this game could function long term and so they completely rebuilt the idea from the ground up. This represented GLB2.
They teased the idea of a new game coming out for a bit only to disclose a sequel without actually identifying it as a sequel. I believe this was another step mishandled as I believe many people were still engaged into GLB and believe that it would continue progressing in its evolution. That was not the case and after a couple years it was made clear that the development of glb classic was ended and you should now just be happy that you can continue to play glb classic as long as people are willing to play it.
From a business prospective I believe it was foolish to splinter the user base to two competing games. They should have determined a way for GLB classic to end its run and migrate all remaining users over to GLB2. Now it seems that both games have dwindled in users which is probably a combination of multiple aspects of mismanagement. Then again I am not sure how serious these guys really are about long term play-ability. It seems they would like to create multiple games to attract new users with the hope that new users will then be introduced to their other games. Your flex dollars purchased work for all games so its an easy way to play without having to buy a different type of currency. This idea probably wouldn't be a bad to do things if they had the resources to continue development and adaption of their games to keep user interest.
P'much. I mean, I get it really. When first starting out they probably had a plan based on what most online RPG's of this type do and how long they survive. But what they missed was a shot at adapting their 'plan' once they could have realized that this game just wasn't going to BE like other online RPG's... and that it had, not just longer legs, but STRONGER legs. It's not like this is a new phenomenon. Way back when I was a kid and played in a band, we lived where there was two kinds of music... Lynyrd and Skynyrd. We loved the music... for some time... but, eventually you kinda get sick of playing the same song over and over and over and over and over.... Even the bands that write the songs get tired of playing particular songs for the 10,000th time. I suspect GLB got tired of working on this game (here) and looked forward to making new games. Even thought that GLB2 would really fly BETTER than the original. What they missed was how people really felt about the original... and so, divided userbase... and some bitterness as well. Probably also expected but, again, not to the levels it really became. Sometimes you can have a great thing in your hands and drop it for something you perceive as even better... and lose both. Now too much time has passed to revive this game to what it once could've been... and GLB2 is what it is and isn't going to be what they hoped. On to the next thing... or retire the whole thing and ride off into the sunset.
