Since the number of teams in PWG has been cut in half, I would like to see those teams become more competitive making for a better PWG experience. So for those teams who keep getting pounded by the top tier teams, here are a few keys to help stop that...
1. STOP THE BIG PLAYS!!! The first rule of running a PWG defense is to minimize the number of long TD's you give up. While good teams can scout and find weaknesses, many of the best teams just spam the big plays hoping to get a couple that go the distance. The good teams also have defenses which for the most part, stop those long TD's. Study those teams and create a defense that focuses on stoping the long TD's and you will find yourself doing much better against the best of PWG.
2. Don't ignore ST! The top teams score often on ST and don't give up many ST TD's. A single ST score can turn the tide of a game, so if your ST's are not that good, study what the better teams are doing and mimic it.
3. SCOUT-SCOUT-SCOUT!!! While the top PWG teams have setup offenses to exploit most defenses, when they play each other, it's usually the team that does the best scouting that wins the game. Yes, many teams put their team on auto-pilot for the regular season and only start scouting in the playoffs, mid-level PWG teams should scout for any hard game as it gives experience. For example, RE caught me in Jkid's tourney this past season when he noticed I had a hole in my defense against screens. While I later corrected it, the damage was done and I was out of that tourney.
