"Shouldn't have been picked up" is your opinion. Face guarding itself is not illegal in NFL. Contact was incidental in my view. There was no significant contact until after the ball hit the defender in the back. His hand touched him, but he did not interfere with him (The jersey grab was earlier in the route and a different issue altogether). Back judge that threw flag had a terrible angle to see if there was contact enough before ball was touched for pass interference . His bad call was corrected by other officials. To be honest, there are too many PI calls league wide in cases just like this where the defender is face guarding, and just because he doesn't turn around gets called for the penalty even without contact. I was glad to see them get it right for a change.
The only fail they made was not announcing why the flag was not picked up as they do in just about every other case when a flag is picked up (and they DO get picked up several times per game)
Fair enough, that's your opinion and I don't have a problem with that. I don't agree with it, I don't think they got it right. To have gotten it right it should have been called defensive holding for the jersey grab... but whatever, at least you bring a valid point to the thread without all that other fluff.
I think any play where a flag is picked up should be an automatic booth review... a flag was thrown for a reason, and its a shame some refs can be talked out of what they saw as a penalty.
