In order for any company to survive it needs revenue, and when GLB as we know it came out in 2008 it was new and fun. Because it was new and fun we didn't mind spending large sums of money to create dots and run teams. Yes the dot replays were visually simple, but because the game itself was fun a vast majority of the user base embraced dot replays and actually enjoyed them.
Then came GLB 2 and we got "sprites" instead of dots (or whatever they're called).. To me this was bort fixing something that wasn't broken. This actually turned me off to GLB 2 because the "sprites" look like something off an 8 bit Nintendo game and I haven't had an 8 bit Nintendo since 1995.
Now bort is on the verge of releasing another game with a "retro" look in Mighty Brawlers.
The problem with online retro look games is they're generally free to play. Both GLB 2 and I'm sure Mighty Brawlers will cost flex. This is 2014. If I'm spending money to play a game it has to be fresh and new. For $60 you can pick up a copy of Madden if you're looking for a realistic football game, and next year a new Mortal Kombat is coming out if you're looking for a realistic fighter.
bort needs to make visually realistic games if he insists on using "sprites" or "dudes" or whatever. It's hard to get excited for a game that looks like it came out in 1991.
