Pacific Pro League Playoffs, Round 2

Southeast Asia Conference

First and foremost, I must apologize to all for “bottom seeds” in this conference, I had none of you winning your games last week. Clearly you came to play and well…the other guys took the round for granted perhaps, what’s more shocking is that in all but one game, there was at least a 10 point differential. Nice work gentlemen on a solid first round.

I also did not tab Sumatra as a team winning their first round, though I’m not real shocked they did, Congrats gentlemen on a solid victory!

Cult of Charleston Rowdies @ Vick’s Dog Walking Service

Now, I’m going to address each team in the order of which they were addressed in Round 1, so here, Vick is first; I criticized them for turnovers and a lack of a rushing attack, man did they listen or what? Maybe it’s “or what” but either way, they really cleaned up their act going into this game with a solid performance on the ground and 0 interceptions. In the end, the failure of the Dead Presidents might just have been the thing that has also made them so successful, all they want to do is run the football, it was an epic failure because Vick’s defense also stepped up in a big way and didn’t allow a single 100 yard rusher. Charleston, I have to say, is the team I’m most surprised by, I predicted a blowout in Round 1, just not in their favor. I said that the Rowdies’ only shot was to shut down Addicts running game, well, for the most part, they did exactly that, more importantly, I also criticized the Rowdies for turnovers and a lack of rushing, they not only rushed the ball respectably, they didn’t turn the ball over and actually forced turnovers by the Addicts. Both of these teams did a complete 360. That just goes to show you, don’t judge a playoff team by the regular season results.

Honestly, there isn’t a single thing I can pinpoint going into this game that I can lean on and say “this is the x-factor”; I expect this to be a grueling, very competitive game. I make predictions every week so I have to make one here; I’m going to go with the team in this game that shocked me the most in Round 1.

Prediction: CCR (no that isn’t Credence Clearwater Revival ) – 17-14

Cult of Personalities, Wu! @ Colonial Marines

In their first matchup, I didn’t exactly give a reason behind the prediction for Colonial, but I looked at the regular season score and thought…I just don’t have the confidence they can win. However, on that same token I did specifically say that PRDM had been efficient, not excellent, not dominant, simply efficient and I didn’t know if that would be enough to win a Championship. Well, it wasn’t because they didn’t even make it out of Round 1, it was a heck of a game and CM had to claw til the very end in this one, but that 4th quarter made all the difference. Truthfully, their game came down to Field Goal Kicking…literally. So the question becomes this, is a team, that I said would have to shut down a rushing QB, but might still get killed by a passing QB, good enough to outlast a very clutch kicker? Here’s a better question, how does a team like Detroit, go into a game where they clearly have the advantage, throw 3 Picks, 0 TDs, and get just 10 yards with their rushing QB? More so, how do you let their rushing quarterback completely troll you? My biggest criticisms for this game is, can CoP win without a strong passing attack (statistically speaking on R1) and can CM win without actually scoring a Touchdown?

I have to ask myself, of two potentially weaker conference teams, which one would I be more willing to bet on going into this game and my prediction is based upon that.

Prediction: CoP – 24-23

Oceanic Conference

Sumatra Seahawks @ LolBar Superstars

You can’t win if you can’t score and that’s what we saw when Sumatra and Asmara faced each other in Round 1. Asmara really struggled to score the 20 points they did and Sumatra didn’t have nearly as many struggles, especially when passing the ball. I also left this game thinking that Sumatra simply has the superior defense. Now, we all know what LBS has to offer, are any of us really shocked by Round 1 results? Once again LolBar forced plenty of Interceptions (4) and recovered 2 fumbles. They also ran the ball for over 600 yards again.. Bottom line here, if Sumatra hopes to have any chance at all, they have to limit their turnovers and shut down that running game, something that honestly, I don’t think is going to happen.

Prediction: LBS – 55-21

Dirty Island Gurupies @ Chico High Panthers

I like this matchup in Round 2, I expect it to be very competitive. DIG didn’t have nearly the 4th quarter presence I talked about in their Round 1 matchup but despite 2 turnovers, they still combined for over 450 yards offensively. Their 4th Qtr defense however, gave a little reason to worry. Chico never trailed in this game and was still scoring points in the 4th Qtr, They didn’t have as much combined yardage as DIG did in their matchup but they also didn’t turn the ball over. Now, the defense played very well, but could it be argued they played much lesser competition? Like I said, I have high expectations for this matchup, it should be interesting. Upset Watch? I think so.

Prediction Dirty Island Gurupies 21-20

Nice write up again, Jack.

I commented in our team forum mid season about VDWS and their offensive strategy. Their rushing attack looked really good to me, yet they passed an awful lot in the regular season. It was their rushing attack that concerned me as a DC.
