I don't agree in that I believe it really broke the player building challenge behind the game all together. It highly shows in the one game I played during that last test server run with the old builds. The game was soooo much more fun without those extra sp's.

Archetypes only really added "extra" SPs to certain builds for certain positions, and even then they were only really "catching up" those builds to other builds of that position. They did, however, open the doors a bit wider for more varied builds.
Bigger culprits were the new training system, AEQ, and raising the level cap. The training system only really served to make the game more obtuse and give tryhards more of an advantage. AEQ adding SAs and percents was fun, adding an extra 9 to 12 to speed did nothing good for the game. Raising the level cap was just flat out unnecessary power creep.
I always thought the game was the best in the 40-50s range. People maximizing attributes actually suffered in other areas at that point, and EQ wasn't adding thousands and thousands of SP value.
