VBAD brought in quite a few roster upgrades for this season, in addition to some coordination changes

That list more than anything else speaks to the terrible state of competition in most pro leagues.

There's always been a little "luck" factor in winning a league championship and making the Pro and/or WL. Sometimes there just some goofy aspect to a team that even a superior team can't beat them or now and again you see a weak team get a string of lucky breaks and win it all.

One Caveat. The entire game is luck, everything we do in it is to militate against negative stuff and maximize the positive. KC got the match ups best for them in the playoffs, and got some rolls when they needed them most in their playoff games. I'd imagine, there have been a lot teams go to WL under similar situations, often leaving a team that could compete there or maybe is superior in the Pro Leagues.
