I could be wrong of course, but if I remember correctly, the custom plays made it so buggy that it never worked right.

it worked if you had a blank DAI (ldo) but now-a-days it's hardly even needed. Just use team AI sharing,do it in off-season and you can transfer via team sharing and then remove a eam from your shared list if you so desire (but the AI will stay with the team you transfer to unless you or someone else removes it)
I can't remember if it will add the plays for you if you also transfer those plays to a team as well, but I think you still have to insert manually
