I'm new to the game, owning my first team and coming through my first pre-season. My team has been comprehensively stuffed in the last two scrimmage games. 7-231 and 24-182!

The last game against Homicidal Killbillies looked, on paper, like it would be a reasonably close one from the match up. I scouted them and assessed that, in their last two games (all I had to go on) they ran 60% and Passed 40% of their plays. I also ascertained that they ran mostly out of Single Back and Single Back Big with Strong I as their most frequently used dual-back set. Predominantly, their rushes were to the weak outside or the strong outside, but more to the weak

Accordingly, I had my first attempt at DAI Playcalling, creating Inputs for all quarters dealing with those three formations and setting my defence to protect the outside run, including creating some custom plays. My base defence was 3-4.

Now, my attempting to customise my playcalling and some plays may have been my downfall but in the previous game, I left all playcalling on basic AI and the result was worse.

Play after play after play, they would rush outside, mostly on the weak side, just as my scouting had predicted and play after play (usually a first down, that's all it took) they ran in for TDs without being touched, my defence nowhere near them at all! Compound this with their PR running 20 returns for 502 yards and 5 TDs with my Punting team seemingly static and clueless.

I obviously haven't got the first idea of what I'm doing and I'm not really sure where to start. I want to prioritise my defence and get my head around defensive playcalling. I've had a read in the DC forum and advice offered elsewhere but whatever I've picked up is nothing like enough to be able to compete (or even participate, my guys just seemed to stand still in the game video)

Anything any of you can do to help me understand what happened and what I'm doing wrong or how I ought to analyse what I am seeing in the replays would be very greatly appreciated.

I'm sorry... it's 4 am here, I didn't really read everything, I went and watched the game against Homicidal Killers... well, your O play calling was quite poor tbh. Prep players are not good on counters and long passes. Your pass plays were calling too long too often on routes that were well covered.

Anyway, the true problem is your D. The least you can do is cover all the receivers, and you were leaving ppl open all the time, specially the TE. Your defense against runs was poor aswell, because you had way too many players in the middle and almost no one outside to pick pitches, also didn't have anyone deep for this purpose.

Using 3-4 as a 'beginner' really won't help against inside runs aswell, but considering what I saw you shouldn't have a lot of problem vs inside runs. Anyway, inside runs aren't really used often on low level leagues, because speed HBs usually ain't agile enough to make cuts in traffic and end up too slow and too lil gain... so basicly your D is giving room to plays that fit well Prep league offense... so... you get blown out.

Ok, I read a lil further, so I'd suggest for you to position your LBs or safeties outside of the DEs more (not really close to the DE, a few yards outside him) to prevent those outside gains. Also you may want to blitz those players that you put outside, as long as you know that they are going to run outside, this way you are more likely to force a tackle for loss.

Edit:

Also, make sure you cover everyone, because this http://goallineblitz.com/game/replay.pl?game_id=2168311&pbp_id=1211351 is ask for a TD.

Many thanks for your thoughts Luzod.

When you say place your LBs or Safeties outside of the DEs, do you mean in the Custom D Play menu? Which begs the next question, in the long run, should I be looking to customise all of the basic defensive playbook. Lots of online MMORPG have pretty crummy default settings that need amending by the user. Is that the case here?

Does the basic playbook automatically cover all the receivers or is that something I need to do manually? Again, is this done in the Custom D Play menu?

I'm not entirely sure how the Default presets, AI Playcalling, Custom D Plays and Packages interact. with each other.

Here's my advise to anyone who wants to get better at anything. Find who's doing it the best and copy it. Do that for a while and eventually you should be able to develop some things on your own. Guys have put in 4+ years of work into this, and the answers are all out there, you just have to know where to look.

Positioning safeties and LBs are way easier with Custom D plays, but you can do it with normal output menu. I think that you could possibly start with normal output menu, but in a long run you must customise all your plays, yes. The Custom D play gives u a lot more options and you can set up the D for the way you like it to play and fix many flaws that normal menu won't cover.

As long as you select "Man to man coverage" and "Cover shell 0 ~ 2" you have everyone covered, as long as you don't blitz anyone. However, this may cause some troubles still as defenders position may not fit the receivers position and route. For example, the sim may set your ROLB to cover without move the HB in I form, your ROLB will be on the weak side and the HB will be in the middle. If the HB runs a route to the strong side, your ROLB may not be able to catch him. On Pro leagues this effect is reduced, as the ROLB will often be really fast aswell, but on low leagues odds are that the HB will be a lot faster than the LB.

Yep, that would seem like good advice. I don't know where to look, but I'll keep seeking
