go look at the positions that are in high demand and make one of those.

What do you mean? So I made a WR today, day 0. If kill him and start a new player at day 40-41 what gain is there other than in the knowledge I've gained on how to create/develop a player?

If you start a player between day 40 and 48, he will have all the training sessions of those 8 days and still be 0 days old as the new season starts, and you'll get 3 extra boosts to get you to level 4 on day 48 of that season. Without those boosts, you cannot get to level 79 and will be behind everyone else. Since we're talking about a free player, then you really have plenty in favor and nothing against making it at day 40.
Basically, your player will be massively better if you start him at that date.

Kill? I don't recall taking any dots out back and shooting them when I retired them...
