in 4-4 position the FS is the only safety, yet is constrained to where he can line up... in this formation (at least) the FS needs more flexibility. Same is true of SS in goal line sets as pointed out by CDZYO

The original thread was too broad for some tastes (mine included), so splitting makes sense.

I think my +1 is in the OP already. Basically, if there's only one safety in the formation (FS in 4-4, SS in both GL), it should be allowed to line up on either side of the formation.
