32 teams began a quest for one gold trophy. Now only two remain. When pre-season starts there are tons of teams thinking if they have what it takes to get that gold loltrophy. Now I know it's only a low level trophy, but regardless of that fact, when you can win a gold and say you did it against so many quality teams that could beat you on any given sim day, it does feel good. There are 8 Prep level leagues (not counting casual), that's 256 teams and only 8 will get a gold. At this level there are only 2 trophies that will say Elite. Now before all the other leagues start bitching about how great they are, all I can say is show us next season by winning your own league and stepping into the Elite ring. Once you get that gold, they can never take it away from you. Good luck to both teams in the title game and let's hope for a good sim that doesn't screw either team and both can say they took the other teams best and walked away a winner.
ELITE #2
Zeta Champion Cape Town Great Whites (16-3) @ Alpha Champion Steel City Mafia (18-1)
RSM - (31-10) SCM
Highlights> This game was played in week one when no one really knows who they are or who they are playing. The game was tied at 10-10 at half time but the Great Whites couldn't get much going in the second half as the Mafia pulled away to a convincing victory. SCM out gained Cape Town 371-132. The Whites played sloppy turning the ball over once and committing 3 penalties to SCM's zero. Keep in mind, this was before Cape Town turned on their mojo starting week 7.
How the Cape Town Great Whites got to this point> Cape Town easily dispatched of the #5 Killa Bee's (79-13), took down #1 seed ECKO BLACK (31-10), and after spotting Lake Opeta a 7-0 lead in the first quarter, came back to score 21 unanswered points on the strength of their ground game and passes to their HB's to win (21-7). Total yards were pretty even, but a fumble right before the half led to a Cape Town TD and the Great Whites never looked back.
How the Steel City Mafia got to this point> Came from behind to beat #8 Whores (31-24), survived 2 PR for TD's to beat the #4Goblins (20-14), and looked ugly beating a dark horse Kung Fu team (21-3). They needed 2 PR for TD's to save a poor offensive performance gaining less than 200 yards total offense. Defense also forced a turnover and came to the rescue shutting Kung Fu out in the second half.
Thoughts on the match-up> When these two teams played in week #1 I would be willing to bet that niether team really thought they would end up seeing each other again. Not very often do teams that face each other in week #1 end up doing that. I wouldn't put a lot of stock into the first match-up as both teams have come a long way since then. After starting 3-3 Cape Town has gone on to win 13 straight games and are a completely different team. SCM has won 15 straight. It's only fitting that the two hottest teams in all of Elite #2 face off to win the gold. SCM could struggle to move the ball against the stout run defense of Cape Town. The Great Whites, on paper, seem to have a weak pass defense, but SCM has a weak passing game. SCM led the league in run defense, was number three pass defense, and they will need that pass defense against the Whites #6 ranked passing game. This game will come down to who can hold onto the ball and ST's. Cape Town sports the #3 ranked PR team and that could be trouble for the Alpha Champ Mafia. I don't think this game is as one sided as the week one match-up and should be a very solid game from start to finish.
Prediction> One team will win and one team will lose
Thanks to everyone for a solid season 20, better luck next season in search of that gold.
