This is a discussion thread for the Screen Pass Test that was conducted on HB screens in regards to the blocking schemes/timing of the O-line and TE.

The test results can be found here: http://goallineblitz.com/game/forum_thread.pl?thread_id=4313294

I watched quite a few screens today and they were very meh. The only upside is that they did not result in an INT.

i like how the blocking execution was all fine and dandy, but it was still thrown low

they need to use more then just WL players.

They need to widen the level of the players used

But bort raised the level that they are thrown at, so thrown low now could be not really that low.

Some of the problem is the QB tactic. If you go back and move the slider to more lofty you will notice fewer thrown low. I've seen also that the strength of the QB plays a role.

From the test they did before the new fixes, it showed that lofty passes were more apt to be thrown low then bullet passes, so while your idea is based on reasonable assumption it is incorrect.

I still think the pre-screen pass animation/flow is a little slow. Teams can insta sack the QB if they use the proper alignments. And there really isn't anything the QB can do as the drop back seems scripted.

How crucial is QB speed/agility here ?

In reasonable football the QB will not have 1/3 the speed of a rusher, and even the less mobile QBs can move backward enough to earn time for a screen pass.

It really shouldn't have anything to do with the QB's speed IMO... It should be his vision check to determine when to dump it off. If the pass rush is fierce and baring down on him... It should just speed up his dump off time to the HB... Basically a quicker release - and shorter drop back.

It's a screen, you cannot throw it early or you will hit the HB back (unless you are just getting rid of the ball).

speed/agility will have one impact. if the QB is still moving when he releases the ball there is a higher chance of a bad pass. more agility/speed = finishing movement sooner and less of a chance of a bad pass due to still moving. Not a guess of mine guys, info from a question to Bort in a Q&A. Of course it was a general question about passing so not sure if it applies to screen passing.

My point was about the QBs been able to move backward fast enough to avoid the sack.
As far as I know letting some unblocked defender (or a single hit at the LOS) to rush the QB is part of any RL screen play. The trick is to let the QB drop back fast enough to buy time for the HB to get into position.
