Important things to note before you start:

1. This has not been implemented yet, but it gives you a head start on what type of plays you want to call
2. You don’t HAVE to use the advanced tactics; you can still use the current interface. This is for people who want to have more control over formations
3. The offensive advanced tactics are not here yet. I wouldn’t expect them anytime soon, sorry OCs
4. Only owners and Defensive Coordinators can play around with the interface.
5. Please read the “How it works” points before you continue:
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/RulesonHowitworks.jpg

Now onto the good stuff:

Disclaimer: Images and descriptions used here might not necessarily be how it will work in GLB, but are representations of what certain coverages look like in real life

Step 1: If you want to use this, you must check off the “Enable Defense AI?” box or else all this will be moot when this gets implemented (Right now step 1 isn't important bcs it isn't implemented yet)

Step 2: Choose your base defense

1. 3-4 D = 3 Defensive Linemen (1 NT, 2 DEs) and 4 Linebackers (LOLB, LILB, RILB, ROLB)
-----o Both ILBs get the “Defense General” bonus, but only one can activate per play (randomly selected)
-----o Generally the 3-4 D works better against the pass

2. 4-3 D (current) = 4 Defensive Linemen (2 DTs – 1 is an NT, 2 DEs) and 3 Linebackers (LOLB, MLB, ROLB)
-----o Generally the 4-3 D works better against the run

Step 3: Creating a New Input/Output – Every Input needs at least 1 Output:
http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/NewInput-Output.jpg

1. You’ll first have to decide whether the input/output you want will be Quarter specific or apply to all 4 Quarters.
-----a. If it will apply to the whole game, click “Add new input” under “AI for All Quarters(General Settings)
-----b. If it will only apply to a specific quarter, click “Add new input” under the quarter of your choice – These inputs will override the general settings

2. Then you’ll want to name the Input to describe the situation, so something like “3rd and short”, or “Prevent Defense” will work

3. Choose the condition of your input. There are several options and they can be combined to create more specific conditions, or left very general:
-----a. Time Remaining in Quarter – You’ll want to use this condition if you want to create a defense that will close out the quarter/half
-----b. Ball Spot – You set the area in which this defense will be employed. You can create a “red-zone” defense if you use this condition
-----c. Down – This is if you want a defense that’s specifically employed at a specific down. Usually people will use this for 3rd or 4th down
-----d. Distance – This will commonly be coupled with Down in order to create specific formations for down and distances such as 3rd and short (0-3 yds), or 3rd and long (10+ yds).
-----e. Score Difference – You can use this to have your defense play more aggressively when you’re down by a lot, or play more conservatively if you’re up by a lot.
-----f. Opponent’s Formation – This will allow your defense to line up specifically to counter the opposing offense’s formation. The option for opponent’s formation is as follows:

Offensive Formations provided by tpaterniti

i. I (any variation)

ii. Weak I : http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/WeakIformation.png

iii. Strong I : http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/StronIformation.png

iv. Big I : http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/BigIformation.png

v. Single Back : http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd314/tpaterniti/Ace_Doubles.jpg (I call it Doubles)

vi. Single Back Big : http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd314/tpaterniti/Ace.jpg (I think that's what you mean)

vii. Pro Set : http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/ProSetFormation.png

viii. Shotgun :
http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd314/tpaterniti/Gun_Doubles_Left.jpg (Gun Doubles Left) | http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd314/tpaterniti/Gun_Trips_Open.jpg (Gun Trips Open)

ix. Goal line : http://i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd314/tpaterniti/I_Jacks.jpg (I call it I Jacks)Number of WR’s in set – This is to help defend against the multiple receiver sets (3, 4, 5).

4. Putting in your Output – All these conditions on the output can be combined or left separate. The more that you specify, the narrower the possible formations being used will be.

-----a. First you must determine how many outputs you’re going to have and what percentage for each you want. All these outputs under the input should add up to 100%

-----b. Then for each output, you should give it a name that describes what will happen, for example “Zone blitz” or “Stuff the box”

-----c. Choose a formation that the output will run from:
----------i. Base Formation is either 3-4 or 4-3 that was specified before
----------ii. 4-3 Nickel – This will use the 4-3 base offense, but the LOLB will be replaced by a CB so that there can be 3 CBs
----------iii. 4-3 Dime - This will use the 4-3 base offense, but the LOLB and ROLB will be replaced by CBs so that there can be 4 CBs
----------iv. 4-3 Quarter - This will use the 4-3 base offense, but all the Linebackers will be replaced by CBs so that there can be 5 CBs
----------v. 3-4 Nickel – The LOLB will be replaced by a CB for 3 CBs
----------vi. 3-4 Dime – Both OLBs will be replaced by CBs for 4 CBs
----------vii. 3-4 Quarter – 3 LBs are replaced by CBs for 5 CBs
----------viii. Goalline – You will basically remove the safeties and stuff the box with LBs and D-linemen: http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/GoalLineFormation.png

-----d. Choose the LB shift – This will help to shift the defense to help out to stuff up the run or rush the QB
----------i. Use Basic Setting – This will just follow what was set in the basic settings
----------ii. Center (no shift) – This is the normal formation: http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/4-3-Unshifted.png
----------iii. Strongside shift – This shifts the LBs to the side where the HB usually runs to help stuff up that hole quicker: http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/4-3-Strong-sideShift.png
----------iv. Weakside shift – This shifts the LBs to the QBs blind side to help with blitzing/rushing the QB: http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/4-3-WeaksideShift.png

-----e. Defense Shell – This specifies how many defenders are covering the deep portion of the field(Cover 0 = man) – Formations provided by bluepike and are only theoretical based upon real life and may not represent the exact GLB model. They are just done to give you a general idea
----------i. Use Basic Settings – This will just follow what you’ve set in your basic settings.
----------ii. Cover 0 (man) – This is just straight up man coverage everyone on the field matches up with somebody
----------iii. Cover 1 – One safety is playing zone while everyone else matches up with people. This is usually used with corner or safety blitzing in order to disrupt the QB. The downside is that the safety could be burned badly by a WR.

----------iv. Cover 2 – 2 safeties split the deep zone in half, while the other defensive players cover everything in front of them:
4-3 Cover 2: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm141/bluepike/43cover2.jpg
3-4 Cover 2: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm141/bluepike/34cover2.jpg

----------v. Cover 3 – 2 CBs and a safety drop back into the deep zone to cover, while the other defensive player covers everything in front of them:
4-3 Cover 3: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm141/bluepike/43cover3.jpg
3-4 Cover 3: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm141/bluepike/34cover3.jpg

----------vi. Cover 4 – Also known as the prevent defense, the 2 CBs and 2 Safeties drop into the deep zone to defend against long passes:
4-3 Cover 4: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm141/bluepike/43cover4.jpg
3-4 Cover 4: http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/mm141/bluepike/34cover4.jpg

-----f. Underneath Coverage – This describes what the other defenders not in cover will do
----------i. Man – The LBs and secondary will just stick to the receiver they’re assigned to
----------ii. Zone – The LBs and secondary will just cover a specific zone

-----g. Coverage Distance – Same as it is no
----------i. Short
----------ii. Medium
----------iii. Long

-----h. Play Focus – This will determine how your defenders move when the sim starts
----------i. Run Focus – Stack the Box more – the LBs and CBs will tend to cheat up
----------ii. Pass Focus – Stack the Box less – The LBs and CBs will tend to stay back
----------iii. Balanced – The normal effect

-----i. Max # of blitzers – you can have up to 6 people blitzing…if you max out your blitzing, you had better hope you sack the QB on a blitz or else he’ll have wide open receivers

-----j. Positional Blitz chance – This allows you to choose which positions will blitz in this output.

Here is an example new input that has 2 outputs:

http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/ExampleInput.jpg

Step 4: Sort your inputs to make sure that they are all utilized
1. The key thing here is to put your most specialized input in first, so that it will definitely be run when the CPU sees that situation
2. Keep your most general inputs on the bottom to act as defaults in case your specialized calls didn’t cover every situation

Step 5: Save your set with a preset name so that you can access it later and create another specialized set: http://i284.photobucket.com/albums/ll4/scarletmbb/Preset.jpg

Step 6: Click Update to save all the changes you made.

Step 7: Repeat steps 3-6 if you want to create specific play sets for different opponents

A special thanks to bluepike and tpaterniti for helping out with formations

If there’s something wrong with this guide, or something that you want clarified, please PM me. The things in this guide are just to help you get an idea of how to set these things up. Once we see the actual implementation of this, we’ll be able to give more definite ideas for formations.

No, they won't I just put step 1 in there to remind ppl to do it when it does come into affect. I've added a little note there.

So season 4 would be a reasonable release date?

This rocks and will make every team more unique due to type of players they have and harder to game plan against. Keep up the great work guys!!!

Even if this ISN'T released, can we still use the 3-4 as our base Defense???

Stupid question ...

I was under the impression that currently (in the sim now) the LOLB was the Nickel and Dime LB. That the MLB and ROLB are the first ones to be replaced by extra corners.

Is this not the case?
