I have already asked this in the tactics forum but no one seems to answer. Hoping for an answer from you guys.
What do the settings for casual team defensive AI represent. In the future I'm contemplating becoming a DC and it would be helpful to know the direct effect of the settings. I know it is casual thus options are limited, but still I think there are people out there who have mastered it quite well, maybe they can provide some insight.
Blitzing: who blitzes LBs or even safeties?
Run Defense/Pass Defense: what does it effect and how? (concretely not just theoretically)
Run Inside/Outside: does it affect player positioning?
Defend Short/Medium/Long: is it the main coverage shell? could this be used to set a basic shell? would it be worth to set 50% short, 50% medium if one wants cover1/2?
I'm asking these because I have had a very disappointing season on my team concerning defense against outside run/QB rush and the suggestions are more for advanced AI. Maybe a compiled list of these option effects could help coordinators simulate advanced tactics.

From my own observations, in bold
Blitzing: who blitzes LBs or even safeties? All the above, it just depends on what the SIM calls on your behalf
Run Defense/Pass Defense: what does it effect and how? (concretely not just theoretically) It affects just that, whether the Defense called for you is along the lines of a 4-3 with the SS cheating to stop the run, or a 4-3 with the CBs deep off the WRs in anticipation of a pass
Run Inside/Outside: does it affect player positioning? not sure what you're asking, inside/outside is just that, whether you run between the tackles or more pitches and so forth
Defend Short/Medium/Long: is it the main coverage shell? could this be used to set a basic shell? would it be worth to set 50% short, 50% medium if one wants cover1/2? This I'm not sure of honestly, it's likely the case as you propose, however I'd wait for someone more authoritative on the subject

See my bold responses, sorry I can't help more.

Thanks this is already a starting point . I have come onto another question if I'm not bothering. Are the plays dependent somewhat of the situation or only on percentages? For example opposition is using 50-50% inside/outside run, then percentage-wise it doesn't matter if you set 100% inside defense or 50-50% you get 50% mismatch either way, but is it the same in the game or using 50-50 is better?

I think it takes into account situational calls. If you are set to run a defense to cover 40/60 inside/outside run and 10/60/30 short/medium/long passing, the defense called will match with the actual down/distance, weighted towards the 40/50 & 10/60/30 ratio that you have selected. If faced with a 3rd & 1 the AI will first look to a run defense, then to your inside/outside selection, then weak/strong. Likewise, a 2nd and 9 would force a look to defending a pass according to your percentages. BUT, this is just how I think it works. I could be WAY off base. Then you have to take into consideration that your opponent has totally gone away from what you thought he would do and your percentages are worthless.

From the Changelog. take it for what it's worth:

August 9, 2009
- Changed default basic tactics defense vs 5WR to quarter instead of dime, and to not call cover 3 vs 5WR.

Damn I didnt read that good post man.

I do think this new Scouting tab on the home pages are going to help with the casual leagues. Also if you have Grease monkey and Monster kill v2 then you can get a decent probability on what they will call.

Thanks guys seems interesting. So it seems that it is best to match the percentages of the opposing team. The main thing left is the defense distance setting, it would be nice if we could use it to set the cover shell.
