I don't think you can choose your successor as team owner anymore. It gets automatically sold according to the team buyer list.
This is bad news. I hope the Vampires aren't turned into another Bermuda. That would weaken the conference significantly, and make for fewer interesting matchups in the following seasons.

It is still possible to sell it preferentially to one of the current GM, if said GM has been in that position for a long enough anount of time.
The owner has quite a few key players on the team, so it would leave it a bit depleted if he would retire his players.
