In their first win of the season, the Phoenix Goons pull off a double-digit upset against the Riverside Revolution, a team with championship aspirations this year. "It felt good", Halfback Freight Train said to the press in a postgame interview. Living up to his name, Train rushed for nearly 6 yards per carry, and smashed through tackles all day.
The ball was run successfully by Phoenix, which spread the production out between a total of 7 backs. Baby Carrot, the previous clear cut starter, only got 4 touches today, although his production on those few carries were for lengthy yardage.
"We can really fool the defense when we're rotating all these guys through the lineup", head coach sackdaddy related to the press. This game also featured rookie Fullback Curtis Carrillo, who touched the ball three times for nearly 20 yards. "Feels good to be a pro, eh?" Carrillo told several reporters.
The passing game was subpar, and needs to improve if Phoenix wishes to be a legit playoff team. Play time was split between Rico Dynamite and An Experiment, who combined, went 18/47 (38%), 191 yards, 1 TD and a pair of picks between them.
The defense, particularly the defensive backs, performed particularly well, holding Riverside's Bryan Cannon to a 48% completion percentage. "I'm a bit flustered right now. There's no excuse for my performance today", Cannon said before he boarded a flight back home to Riverside.
There was one star for Riverside, tonight: Rabbit Ears, a cornerback. He collected both of the squad's interceptions, and racked up 7 tackles along the way. A point of concern, however, were 3 missed tackles. "We don't normally miss that many tackles, and I think that's why we lost today."
The next opponent for Phoenix is the Mid-Pac Warriors, who share a record of 1-3 with Phoenix.
