CITY OF CHAMPIONS UPDATE

There is not a lot of news this week, so I’ll have a couple of interview excerpts from two players, one each from the Gods and the Bandits.

First, the Brisbane Bandits have announced a new annual promotion to help fans cheer on their team. For the upcoming home game against the Newcastle Bearcats on May 5, the team will hold the first “Give them the Finger” Day when all foam fingers will be 25% off at the team store. This promotion will also be held for the last home game prior to the playoffs, which will be May 27 against the IC Incinerators.

The team also plans “Tube Steak” Day and “Gods Jersey Bonfire” Night.

Two players, one from each Brisbane team, have graciously accepted to answer some questions for the City of Champions Update this past week: Bandits 3rd string HB and main punt and kick-off returner Clifford Pointdexter; and Gods starting CB Alex Wondertramp.

Pointdexter is a prototypical speed merchant who comes in relief, later in games, to the Bandits’ Thunder and Lightining combo of Bronco Nagurski and Ray Day. However, his main role is as a returner, a role in which he excels. As a matter of fact, the day after answering these questions, he returned a punt 78 yards for a score.

As well as being a great returner, Pointdexter proved that he had a fiery sense of humour when answering our questions. When asked about how the new rivalry in Brisbane would affect people who were previously fans of both teams, since both team are now in the same league this season, he had this to say: “Think Catholics and Protestants in Ireland. Families will be torn apart. Children will be left crying.”

Concerning which team in the Alpha Conference he thoughtwould be the most competitive, he said that the Buffalos had a “pretty amazing offense.” (the interview was conducted before the games on May 1 when the Buffalos were upset by the Auckland Flames 28-24.)
About his style of running, Pointdexter said, tongue-in-cheek, “I have a very different style. I close my eyes, and run as fast as I can until I hear people start cheering. When I'm needed at HB, it tends to be at the end of a game when everyone is tired. So I usually try to be in the secondary by the time D-Lines are out of their stances.”

Wondertramp is a key member of his team’s defensive unit. As a starter in the secondary, he helped his team win the Pro Championship last season, and be at the top of the Zeta Conference so far this season with 3 straight wins. This young man takes pride in being a well-rounded corner who strives to excel at lending run support as well as pass coverage. In his answers to our questions, he has shown himself to be well-articulated with a pointed sense of game analysis. He had this to say about the two new teams being promoted from AAA to the Pro league:

about the Saipan Fighters “I feel like that they will contend for a playoff berth this season, but I also observe a few weaknesses on their team that could cause their downfall in the playoffs if a team were to exploit it properly.” He’s anxious to play against them tonight and thinks his team will have a good gameplan for them.

and about the crosstown rival Brisbane Bandits “I like the team's spirit and confidence, I just wish that they would show the rest of the League more respect. (…) For them to assume that they are just gonna waltz into the League Championship is premature. Overall they seem like a good team that should make it to the playoffs. (…) I really hope that they do make it to the playoffs because an all Brisbane final would be a great way to start this rivalry. It would be nice to have an actual game decide who is better instead of speculation.”

Wondertramp feels that his team’s main strength is game planning. “I know I need to put more work in the film room to get to that level. In last years playoffs, i felt that we had maybe the fourth or fifth best team on paper, but due to our strategies we were able to negate level disparities and dominate.”

When asked to assess the main competition in the Zeta Conference, he mentioned Vincennes as a contender and a team he would like to beat in the playoffs to avenge last season’s regular season close loss to them. He also recognized the Tongan Crimson Auha as a much improved team.

That’s it for this week’s edition of the City of Champions Update. Look for volume 3 next week-end.
